Berlin: I Due Forni

Schonhauser Allee 12 , Phone: 44.01.73.33

Great pizza in a hip, frenzied environment

Directions: The restaurant is very close to the Senefelder Platz U-Bahn stop.

I loved this pizzeria! The dining room is a big, cavernous space with customer graffiti on the walls. The noise level is high. You might have to sit at a table with others. The servers run around like chickens with their heads cut off and service can be a bit scattered. But it is worth it, because the pizza, cooked in a wood fired oven, is fantastic.

The place is run by Italians, and my Italian (which is not very good) was understood easily. Many, many Berliners were eating there on both nights I visited, and the cigarette smoke was a bit offputting - but there is a new law going into effect in January 2008 that should take care of that problem. But if you go before, it will be smoky.

Pizzas range from around €5 for a Margherita to 9 or 10 for pizzas with many toppings. My diavola was only 6.50, and it is 1.30 for extras. Salads are just OK. The only bad thing is that the wine here truly sucks, so get beer. A large pilsner is 3.20, while a quartino of crappy wine is 3.70.

The restaurant also has pasta and other dishes, but I can't say what they are like because I am a Pizza Addict. One who will go to this place every time I go to Berlin.
