The Louvre for another Day, Now it's Time for a Cafe

Translated by Maureen.

I have been to Paris twice, but haven't yet been to the Louvre". And that it fine with Pauline Kenny of Santa Fe (New Mexico), who advocates for Slow Travel. "It is a different way of tourism, there are no forced visits. One need not cross things off a list: Eiffel Tower - seen; Mont Saint Michel - seen; the Louvre... Slow travel is based on picking and choosing. Reading a newspaper in a cafe for a few hours while watching people pass by is also an activity." Pauline and her husband launched in 2000 the website www.slowtrav.com, a forum for tranquil travelers to exchange experiences that have transformed their way of looking at vacations.

In slow travel the place matters less than the attitude of the traveler. "It is not about seeing something or doing anything. It is more about seeing and doing what interests you, not what you are supposed to do and see," says Pauline Kenny, "It is a more individualized trip." Kenny offers some advice for traveling slowly: "Remain in the same place for more than two or three days, and get to know the area well; stay in a villa, apartment or agriturismo; shop where the neighbors shop; read books by local authors; take a bike ride; have a picnic; take cooking classes or painting lessons; learn the language; if you want to stay in bed one day, do it; it's a vacation, there should be room for improvisation.
