Movies that were filmed in Australia. My top picks are marked *.

A Town Like Alice, 1981 (mini series). This is a romantic drama, set in Alice Springs after the second world war. It's based on the book by Nevil Shute and is set in Longreach, Queensland and in Silverton, New South Wales.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, 1994. This comedy musical is based on a story of Australian drag queens entertainers who go on a road trip. It shows us numerous Australian scenic locations.

All the Rivers Run, 1983 (mini series). Set in the port of Echuca in Victoria, this is a romantic story starring the hunky John English and also Sigrid Thornton. It gives you a great glimpse of the riverboat life from the 1890s.

Babe, 1995, stars one of Australia's top comedian actors – Magda Szubanski. It's a family comedy with delicious scenery, as it's set in the southern highlands of New South Wales.

Breaker Morant, 1980, is a war drama about military morality. It's set during the Boer War when three Australian lieutenants are on trial for shooting Boer prisoners. Included in the many South Australia locations are the town of Burra and the Flinders Ranges.

The Cars That Ate Paris, 1974, is a black comedy horror movie set in the fictional town of Paris, which is really Sofala, in New South Wales.

*The Castle, 1997, is a brilliant family comedy movie set in Melbourne, Victoria. It's about a typical Aussie "battler" family who almost lose their family home to the government. A top notch movie.

Coolangatta Gold, 1984, is a sports movie set at the beach in Coolangatta, Queensland. It's about an endurance marathon race from Surfers Paradise up to Coolangatta.

Crackerjack, 2002, is a comedy about a bowling club take over at Australia's oldest lawn bowls club - Melbourne Bowling Club in Victoria.

*Crocodile Dundee, 1986, is a beaut Paul Hogan outback adventure. It's a wonderful comedy with a great cast and it's set in the Northern Territory.

Crocodile Hunter, 2002, is an action adventure movie starring Steve Irwin from the Australian Zoo on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.

Danny Deckchair, 2003, is a romantic comedy about an Aussie who becomes a national sensation when he lifts off in his deck chair tied to balloons. It's set in Bellingen, New South Wales, which is a small town between Brisbane and Sydney.

*The Dish, 2000, is by the same clever people who made The Castle (see recommendation above). It's a wonderful dramatic comedy about man's first step on the moon and is set in the radio telescope town of Parkes in New South Wales.

Empty Beach, 1985, is a thriller about Sydney's underworld set in Sydney, New South Wales.

The Endless Summer, 1966, is a beautifully filmed surfer movie with locations right around Australia.

Hotel Sorrento, 1995, is a drama set in the Victorian seaside hamlet of Sorrento in Victoria.

Japanese Story, 2003, is a drama set against the background of an Australian desert landscape in Perth, Port Hedland and The Pilbara in Western Australia.

Mad Max, 1979, starring Mel Gibson, was set in and around Melbourne in Victoria.

*The Man from Snowy River, 1982, is a romantic drama and the movie was made from the Banjo Patterson poem of the same name. The scenery and the soundtrack are outstanding. It was set in central Victoria.

The Man Who Sued God, 2001, is a dramatic comedy with Billy Connelly. It's set in Bermagui on the south coast of New South Wales.

My Brilliant Career, 1979. This is a movie set at the turn of the century in the wilds of the outback. It's filmed in the Monaro Region of New South Wales.

On Our Selection, 1995. This is a romantic comedy with Leo McKern and Dame Joan Sutherland set in beautiful Braidwood, a country town in New South Wales.

Paperback Hero, 1999, is a romantic comedy set in the locations of St George and Brisbane in Queensland, and also in Sydney, New South Wales.

Picnic at Hanging Rock, 1975, is a romantic drama that is famous for the cinematography of Russell Boyd. It's another outback film shot in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia.

*Playing Beatie Bow, 1986, a historical romance set back in 1873, in the early days of colonization in Australia. It portrays The Rocks, which is the historic center of Sydney, in New South Wales.

Puberty Blues, 1981, is from the book of the same name by Kathy Lette and Gabrielle Carey. It's a dramatic look at growing up on the beaches and in the suburbs of Sydney, in New South Wales.

*Sirens, 1994, is a romantic movie about my favorite Australian artist – Norman Lindsay. The music is haunting and the setting, the Blue Mountains of New South Wales is divine.

Strange Bedfellows, 2004, is a comedy with top actors Paul Hogan and Michael Caton posing as a gay couple for tax purposes. It's set in the small country town of Yackandandah in Victoria.

Sunday Too Far Away, 1975, a drama starring Jack Thompson and is a piece of classic Australiana about the sheep shearing sheds of the 1950s. It was shot entirely on location near Port Augusta and Quorn in South Australia.

*They're a Weird Mob, 1966, a comedy, was re-released on DVD in 2003. This is one of my all time favorite movies. It's from the novel by John O'Grady and is an Australian classic set in Sydney, New South Wales.

Travelling North, 1987, is a great David Williamson play that he adapted to film. It's a drama, starring Leo McKern of Rumpole of the Bailey. It's a road trip movie from Melbourne, Victoria up to Port Douglas in Queensland.
