A friend by any other name...

Not so very long ago, someone said to me:

"I really enjoy sharing stories with you and getting to know you better. There are some people in my journey who, in the words of Anne of Green Gables, are “Kindred Spirits”. I feel that when I am with you. Just wanted you to know that."

I was reminded of this beautiful expression of friendship today when I came across the very words she referenced:

“A bosom friend - an intimate friend, you know - a really kindred spirit to whom I can confide my inmost soul”
~ From “Anne of Green Gables”, by L.M. Montgomery

And again when I saw this drawing, which totally tickled my funny bone. How cool that it is entitled "Kindred Spirits" because it just feels perfect for this particular friendship...

"Let's face it, friends make life a lot more fun."
~ Charles R. Swindoll

Here are more beautifully expressed thoughts about the precious gift of friendship...

e mee ngwa ngwa emeghalia odachi.
(Hold a true friend with both your hands)

~ Nigerian Proverb

"O my friend,
Let us claim each other first.
Then let us walk together
Towards our destined goal."

~ Sri Chinmoy

"Friendship is the bridge between two human beings,
Friendship is the bridge between earth and Heaven,
Friendship is the bridge between the known and the unknown."

~ Sri Chinmoy

"It is a sweet thing, friendship, a dear balm,
A happy and auspicious bird of calm,
Which rides o'er life's ever tumultuous Ocean;
A God that broods o'er chaos in commotion..."

~ From "Epipsychidion", by Percy Bysshe Shelley

"And a youth said, "Speak to us of Friendship."
Your friend is your needs answered.
He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.
And he is your board and your fireside.
For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace.
When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the "nay" in your own mind, nor do you withhold the "ay."

And when he is silent your heart ceases not to listen to his heart;
For without words, in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all expectations
are born and shared, with joy that is unacclaimed.

When you part from your friend, you grieve not;
For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the
mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain.

And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit.
For love that seeks aught but the disclosure of its own mystery is not love
but a net cast forth: and only the unprofitable is caught.

And let your best be for your friend.
If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its flood also.
For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill?
Seek him always with hours to live.
For it is his to fill your need, but not your emptiness.
And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of
pleasures. For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is
refreshed."

~ From "The Prophet", by Kahlil Gibran

“How rare and wonderful is that flash of a moment when we realize we have discovered a friend.”
~ William Rotsler

"Two may talk together under the same roof for many years, yet never really meet; and two others at first speech are old friends."
~ Mary Catherwood

“In the moment of friendship, two souls suddenly recognize each other. It could be a meeting on the street, or at a party or a lecture, or just a simple, banal introduction, then suddenly there is the flash of recognition and the embers of kinship grow. There is an awakening between you, a sense of ancient knowing.”
~ From “Anam Cara…Wisdom from the Celtic World“, by John O’Donohue

“What is a friend? A single soul dwelling in two bodies.”
~ Aristotle, from Diogenes Laertius, Lives of Eminent Philosophers
Greek critic, philosopher, physicist, & zoologist (384 BC - 322 BC)

"Siamo angeli con un'ala soltanto
e possiamo volare solo restando abbracciati"
(We are, each of us angels with only one wing;
and we can only fly by embracing one another.)

~ From “Il Pensieri di Bellavisa”, by Luciano de Crescenzo

"The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, nor the kindly smile...it's the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when he discovers that someone else believes in him and is willing to trust him with his friendship."
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Oh, the comfort - the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person - having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all right out, just as they are, chaff and grain together; certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and then with the breath of kindness blow the rest away."
~ From “A Life for a Life (1859)”, by Dinah Maria (Mulock) Craik

"Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born."
~ Anais Nin

"A friend is a loved one who awakens your life in order to free the wild possibilities within you.”
~ From “Anam Cara…Wisdom from the Celtic World“, by John O’Donohue

THE ABC OF FRIENDSHIP
A friend does most of these:

(A)ccepts you as you are
(B)elieves in "you"
(C)alls you just to say "HI"
(D)oesn't give up on you!

(E)nvisions the whole of you (even the unfinished parts)
(F)orgives your mistakes
(G)ives unconditionally
(H)elps you
(I)nvites you over

(J)ust "be" with you
(K)eeps you close at heart
(L)oves you for who you are
(M)akes a difference in your life

(N)ever Judges
(O)ffer support
(P)icks you up
(Q)uiets your fears
(R)aises your spirits

(S)ays nice things about you
(T)ells you the truth when you need to hear it
(U)nderstands you
(V)alues you

(W)alks beside you
(X)-plains thing you don't understand
(Y)ells when you won't listen and
(Z)aps you back to reality

There is a beautiful entry about spiritual friendships on this blog called (what else) "Spirituality".

And let's not forget how often friendship is celebrated in music, music, music!! :)

Carole King says it all in her lovely song
"You've Got a Friend":

"That's What Friends Are For", written by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager and sung here by Dionne Warwick and Friends:

And one of my absolute all time favourite songs...Bill Withers'
"Lean On Me":

Friends, kindred spirits, sisters of the soul...whatever name is given this rare and wondrous connection, it is truly one of life's great blessings.

Kathy (Trekcapri):

Hi Anne, great post! I love all the quotes and the ABC's of what a friend is. I love all the three songs you posted. That last one with Bill Withers singing Lean on Me was very cool! I love that song. Thanks so much for writing this wonderful entry. Have a great weekend!

Anne:

Thanks Kathy! I thought the ABCs were pretty cool too.

And I LOVE the line at the end of the Kahlil Gibran poem on friendship: "For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed."
