Saturday Photohunt: Aqua

Getting back into the Photohunt habit...here is an "Aqua" scene. I watched these boys swimming in Nice...they were having so much fun, their joy was infectious!

Saturday Photohunt: Doors

My photo for this week's theme of "Doors" is...Britain's oldest door!

IMG_0247.JPG

My mom and I stumbled upon it last April when we spent a couple days in London. It's in the entrance to the Chapel House, one of the rooms in the Westminster Abbey complex. It was only "discovered" in 2005 - that is, the door had been there for ages, but nobody knew just how old it actually is until 2005 when scientific dating determined it's close to 1,000 years old!

Saturday Photohunt: Ripple

I decided to go with ripples in the sand as my choice for this week's theme. I loved the texture of the sand on this little stretch of beach, and the bits and pieces of stone, shell, seaweed...

Saturday Photohunt: Vast

I have many photos of vast scenic vistas...but I decided to go in a different direction for this week. Here is Paolo Veronese's The Wedding Feast at Cana. From the Louvre's website:

"In 1553, Veronese was summoned to Venice where he gave free rein to his decorative talent in vast canvases that blended masterful composition, splendid contemporary costumes, and luminous colors. The Wedding Feast at Cana graced the refectory designed by Palladio for the Benedictine monastery on the Venetian island of San Giorgio Maggiore. With masterly freedom of interpretation, Veronese transposed the biblical episode to the sumptuous setting of a Venetian wedding."

It was completed in 1563, and at 6.77 x 9.94 metres (22.2 x 32.6 ft), it is one of the largest paintings in the Louvre's vast collection and hangs directly opposite the Mona Lisa.

No clue who the dude sitting on the railing is, but he gives some perspective to the painting's vast size, so I snapped a shot with him in it....

Saturday Photohunt: Bridges

As usual, I have far too many possibilities and struggle to choose just one photo for this week's theme of bridges! This is an ancient Roman bridge over the Ouvèze River that run through the lovely town of Vaison-la-Romaine in the Vaucluse section of Provence. The bridge connects the old medieval hill town to the lower town. I crossed over it a few times during our week in Vaison. The engineering and workmanship (workpersonship?) are remarkable! This bridge withstood bombing during WWII, and was the only bridge to survive massive flooding and mudslides in 1992 that swept away all other bridges, and parts of the town's buildings.

I really like the light in this particular photo. (The view is of the lower town.)

Saturday Photohunt: Intricate

When I checked and saw that this week's theme is intricate, I thought immediately of a spider web that I came across one misty morning at the campground...

Saturday Photohunt: Reflections

This is a photo taken outside a small rural church in Melford, Nova Scotia. My best friend used to be minister here many years ago. One day we were up in that area, so we stopped in so she could show me her "little church in the wildwood." Unfortunately it was closed and no one was around to let us in, but I snapped this shot outside the window looking in...the reflection was accidental but I think it is so cool!

Saturday Photohunt: Amber

I had a hard time figuring out what to post for amber...when I googled it to get a better sense of what colour it is, some images were quite yellow, some had more of an orange hue...just what the heck is the colour of amber?! I don't have any photos of the real stuff, the fossilized tree resin. But these gummy candies in La Bouqueria market in Barcelona have an amber kind of glow, at least to my eyes!

Saturday Photohunt: Boogie

Today's theme is "Boogie" and...I got nothing.

I looked and looked for a photo I knew would be perfect, but cannot find it anywhere in my computer photo files or in the boxes in the basement. It was a photo of me, probably 20 yrs ago, dressed for Halloween as a cheesy disco queen. You'll just have to use your imagination!

I'll do better next week, I'm sure!

Saturday Photohunt: Deluxe

When I saw the theme Deluxe, I instantly thought of a Cartier display I saw in a store window in Nice, France.

IMG_3036.JPG

I don't think wrist watches get more deluxe than the following diamond studded one with the 35,300 euro price tag...

IMG_3034.JPG

I find myself wondering...why 35,300 euro? If you're charging that much for a watch...wouldn't you just round off to 35,000?? I mean, does an extra 300 really matter at that point? But then again...what do I know about the price of watches...I wear a hand-me-down from my mother! lol

Saturday Photohunt: Bird

A gorgeous little chickadee is my choice for today's theme "bird."

During a class break last summer, we found a chickadee lying on its back on the rug just inside the door to the building. One of my classmates freaked out for some reason, perhaps she's afraid of birds, or dead things, or both. We did think it was dead at first, but then I realized its chest was ever so slightly moving up and down with breath. I figure it must have flown into the glass door (which had been open at one point to let some fresh air into the building) and stunned itself. So I gently gathered it up and took it outside to a quiet spot. I'm happy to say it recovered after a few minutes and flew away.

Saturday Photohunt: Ginormous

This GINORMOUS anchor in Halifax's Point Pleasant Park is from Canada's last aircraft carrier, HMCS Bonaventure, which was decommissioned in 1970. Known as the Canadian Peacetime Sailors Memorial, it serves to "commemorate the personnel of the Armed Forces of Canada who lost their lives at sea in the performance of their duties and for whom there is no known grave."

Saturday Photohunt: Indigo

I must confess that I had google "indigo" to find out what it actually looked like...I had pictured it as a very dark blue, but to my surprise, it's much lighter and brighter than I'd imagined! And quite gorgeous, especially on those wonderful little birds called indigo buntings. I wish I had photos of those beauties, but alas they don't live in my area. But I peeked through my files and found this fantastic indigo door. It's one I came across in the town of Roussillon in the south of France.

Saturday Photohunt: Ink

This week's theme is INK. I thought of tattoos, ink on skin. I was fascinated by the intricate ink on a guy who was in the line up in front of me to get into the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.

His other arm was also covered, but the way we were standing, I wasn't able to get a good shot of it. But I managed this, which is actually my favourite of the pics:

Saturday Photohunt: Water

The trouble with this week's theme is...where to start?? I have a ton of water photos...lakes, rivers, beaches, our pool, brooks, puddles, raindrops on roses...and more.

Being utterly fascinated by water, I could post a whole photo album (or seven) on this week's theme...but this is the image that caught my eye as I browsed through my collection. It's a small brook in a local park. I love the play of light and shadow and the way the liquidness comes through even in a photo.

Saturday Photohunt: Skies

I missed Saturday but here are my pics for this week's photohunt theme "skies". These are the two ends of a massive cloud formation that rolled over my house a few years ago. It was amazing! We stood out watching it for a long time...and then the rain came pounding down!

Saturday Photohunt: Sunset

I thought it would be really hard deciding which of my hundreds (maybe thousands) of sunset photos to post...but as soon as I opened my photo folder, my eyes lit on a series of pics from one evening this past March. Aha, I thought, I'll go with "biggest change in a half hour time frame" as my pick for this week's theme.

The sunset March 7th was incredible...it began as a blazing ball of white light slowly descending behind the black line of trees...

IMG_5231-001.JPG

...and a half hour later, the sky was awash in colour...

Saturday Photohunt: Rest

I've gone in a different direction for this week's theme of rest...

What is the rest of this story?
Once upon a time in Rome...we encountered a wedding party just outside Santa Maria in Aracoeli. The bride and groom posed for photos, shared a toast, and then rode off in their chauffeur driven Bentley convertible. Were they as wealthy as they appeared, or had they saved up for a huge wedding splurge? I wonder if they were an interfaith couple because the wedding took place in a Roman Catholic church and the groom was wearing a (Jewish?) skull cap. And what do you suppose is behind that peculiar look the bride is giving the groom in the last photo?

Saturday Photohunt: Clouds

Some day flying might grow old to me, but so far I find it thrilling every time! I enjoy watching the scenery when we're low enough to see land, but I also find the clouds fascinating...rising up through them and then seeing that huge expanse of white fluffiness. My take on this week's theme is...

Saturday Photohunt: Funny

This week's theme - funny - kind of had me stumped. It seems I don't often stop to snap pics of the things that strike me as funny. Which is kind of funny in itself, given my inclination to snap pics of everything I encounter! haha But I found these photos of some quirky little ceramic pieces that my mother and I saw in a shop in Barcelona. The shoes in particular amuse me!

Saturday Photohunt: Candle

My entry for this week's theme: candles in the lovely Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Ventimigla, Italy.

DSCF1869-001.JPG

We visited Ventimiglia one fine day in early May, as a day trip from Nice. I've read several reviews dismiss Ventimiglia as "nothing to see, move along", but my mother and I found it utterly charming. It was kind of gritty...peeling paint, crumbling pavement, overgrown patches of grass...not in a totally unkempt way, just that slight neglect that comes of people living their lives and not fancying things up for the tourist crowd. We arrived at lunch time, so walked across the bridge to the old town and had a very tasty pizza, then we explored the town, including the cathedral, baptistry and crypt...eventually making our way down to the pebbly beach, where we sunbathed and splashed in the sea, and then finished off with gelato in the park, watching the old men play bocce. A really wonderful day!
