Saturday Photohunt: Aqua

Getting back into the Photohunt habit...here is an "Aqua" scene. I watched these boys swimming in Nice...they were having so much fun, their joy was infectious!

Saturday Photohunt: Doors

My photo for this week's theme of "Doors" is...Britain's oldest door!

IMG_0247.JPG

My mom and I stumbled upon it last April when we spent a couple days in London. It's in the entrance to the Chapel House, one of the rooms in the Westminster Abbey complex. It was only "discovered" in 2005 - that is, the door had been there for ages, but nobody knew just how old it actually is until 2005 when scientific dating determined it's close to 1,000 years old!

Saturday Photohunt: Ripple

I decided to go with ripples in the sand as my choice for this week's theme. I loved the texture of the sand on this little stretch of beach, and the bits and pieces of stone, shell, seaweed...

Saturday Photohunt: Vast

I have many photos of vast scenic vistas...but I decided to go in a different direction for this week. Here is Paolo Veronese's The Wedding Feast at Cana. From the Louvre's website:

"In 1553, Veronese was summoned to Venice where he gave free rein to his decorative talent in vast canvases that blended masterful composition, splendid contemporary costumes, and luminous colors. The Wedding Feast at Cana graced the refectory designed by Palladio for the Benedictine monastery on the Venetian island of San Giorgio Maggiore. With masterly freedom of interpretation, Veronese transposed the biblical episode to the sumptuous setting of a Venetian wedding."

It was completed in 1563, and at 6.77 x 9.94 metres (22.2 x 32.6 ft), it is one of the largest paintings in the Louvre's vast collection and hangs directly opposite the Mona Lisa.

No clue who the dude sitting on the railing is, but he gives some perspective to the painting's vast size, so I snapped a shot with him in it....

Saturday Photohunt: Bridges

As usual, I have far too many possibilities and struggle to choose just one photo for this week's theme of bridges! This is an ancient Roman bridge over the Ouvèze River that run through the lovely town of Vaison-la-Romaine in the Vaucluse section of Provence. The bridge connects the old medieval hill town to the lower town. I crossed over it a few times during our week in Vaison. The engineering and workmanship (workpersonship?) are remarkable! This bridge withstood bombing during WWII, and was the only bridge to survive massive flooding and mudslides in 1992 that swept away all other bridges, and parts of the town's buildings.

I really like the light in this particular photo. (The view is of the lower town.)

Saturday Photohunt: Intricate

When I checked and saw that this week's theme is intricate, I thought immediately of a spider web that I came across one misty morning at the campground...

Saturday Photohunt: Reflections

This is a photo taken outside a small rural church in Melford, Nova Scotia. My best friend used to be minister here many years ago. One day we were up in that area, so we stopped in so she could show me her "little church in the wildwood." Unfortunately it was closed and no one was around to let us in, but I snapped this shot outside the window looking in...the reflection was accidental but I think it is so cool!

Saturday Photohunt: Amber

I had a hard time figuring out what to post for amber...when I googled it to get a better sense of what colour it is, some images were quite yellow, some had more of an orange hue...just what the heck is the colour of amber?! I don't have any photos of the real stuff, the fossilized tree resin. But these gummy candies in La Bouqueria market in Barcelona have an amber kind of glow, at least to my eyes!

Saturday Photohunt: Boogie

Today's theme is "Boogie" and...I got nothing.

I looked and looked for a photo I knew would be perfect, but cannot find it anywhere in my computer photo files or in the boxes in the basement. It was a photo of me, probably 20 yrs ago, dressed for Halloween as a cheesy disco queen. You'll just have to use your imagination!

I'll do better next week, I'm sure!

Here's my take on "Colours"...a collage of my younger daughter's ever-changing hair colour over the years...enjoy!

Saturday Photohunt: Deluxe

When I saw the theme Deluxe, I instantly thought of a Cartier display I saw in a store window in Nice, France.

IMG_3036.JPG

I don't think wrist watches get more deluxe than the following diamond studded one with the 35,300 euro price tag...

IMG_3034.JPG

I find myself wondering...why 35,300 euro? If you're charging that much for a watch...wouldn't you just round off to 35,000?? I mean, does an extra 300 really matter at that point? But then again...what do I know about the price of watches...I wear a hand-me-down from my mother! lol

Saturday Photohunt: Bird

A gorgeous little chickadee is my choice for today's theme "bird."

During a class break last summer, we found a chickadee lying on its back on the rug just inside the door to the building. One of my classmates freaked out for some reason, perhaps she's afraid of birds, or dead things, or both. We did think it was dead at first, but then I realized its chest was ever so slightly moving up and down with breath. I figure it must have flown into the glass door (which had been open at one point to let some fresh air into the building) and stunned itself. So I gently gathered it up and took it outside to a quiet spot. I'm happy to say it recovered after a few minutes and flew away.

Saturday Photohunt: Ginormous

This GINORMOUS anchor in Halifax's Point Pleasant Park is from Canada's last aircraft carrier, HMCS Bonaventure, which was decommissioned in 1970. Known as the Canadian Peacetime Sailors Memorial, it serves to "commemorate the personnel of the Armed Forces of Canada who lost their lives at sea in the performance of their duties and for whom there is no known grave."
