Easter Procession

This 1898 watercolour by Maurice Prendergast shows the Easter Procession inside the Basilica di San Marco. Easter is one of the high holy days when they turn the Pala d'Oro around to face the congregation, and I bet that the church will be full today for Mass.

Coming soon: another post about Prendergast and an upcoming show of his work at the Peggy Guggenheim museum in Venice.

I plan to spend part of this holiday weekend "in Venice" with Guido Brunetti via the latest Donna Leon mystery, just released this month. There's not much that's better than having a new book that you really want to read!

Here's a BBC interview with Donna Leon and Toni Sepeder (author of Brunetti's Venice, a book of walking tours based on the mystery series).

Happy Easter, Happy Passover, Happy Spring!

Kathy (Trekcapri):

Happy Easter Sunday Annie! That is a beautiful water color. And I'm sure that today's Mass in San Marco will be so beautiful. Wish I was there. Enjoy reading Donna Leon's latest book and have a great Easter Sunday.

Nice painting! Looking forward to your post on the artist.

Oh, Annie. Looking forward to a review of this book when you are finished, please? Happy Easter, Menehune

Enjoy your Easter and your book!

Beautiful painting! Happy Easter. Enjoy your trip to Venice :)

I don't know if you are planning on going back to Venice in December, but I just learned that there would be a Prendergast exhibition at the Guggenheim Venice! From Oct. 9 til Jan. 2010...
Could be interesting!

Thanks everyone, hope you all are having a nice Easter weekend.

Menehune, several people on Slow Talk have already finished "About Face" and have said that it's their favorite of the series. I'm only about half-way through and am really enjoying it.

AnnaLivia, yes I'd love to see that show. It opens in Mass. this summer, then goes to Venice and then to Houston, TX.

Happy Easter, Annie! Thanks for this copy of such a beautiful watercolour, the Pala d'Oro is stunning.

And I'm deeply envious that you have the new Donna Leon -- I so agree, there are few things better than starting a great book (and knowing that you have the entire story still ahead of you!)

Happy Easter to you too Annie.
I love the painting, and can't wait to hear more about the artist.
You book sounds great, enjoy!

That painting is gorgeous! So detailed and colorful.

Speaking of commissari, last night I was watching YouTube videos of Commissario Montealbano to listen to some Italian! I also watched a couple of cooking "shows" on the Italian youtube site.

Happy Easter, friend!

Sandra, I hope you had a good Easter too. I finished the book late last night and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a great trip to Venice and so good to spend time with those characters again. I'm a little bit bummed that it's over and it'll be another year before the next one comes out, oh well. At some point, I want to re-read the series in order (because I didn't read them in order the first time).

Candi, hope you had a nice Palm Sunday. I've enjoyed reading your blog and learning the differences between Eastern and Western Easters.

Chiocciola, thanks! Your trip to Italy is not very far away now - how exciting! You are smart to freshen up your Italian!

I hope that you had a great Easter! The Easter bunny left the new Leon book for me so I am just getting transported back to Venice now. What a wonderful journey so far.

Jerry, I'm impressed with the Easter Bunny's taste. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Coming late to this post but I'm sure you had a lovely Easter weekend. The watercolor is gorgeous!

I think I’m one of the few ST Venice fans that have not read any of the Leon’s mystery series. Maybe I'll start this summer since it seems that I'll be stuck in the desert.

The big story over the weekend was the new First Dog and I kept thinking of your nephews. Any news about the puppy?

Maria, they are really great books. Even people who haven't been to Venice enjoy them but they are truly wonderful if you've been there and love the city.

Yes, their new puppy arrived the same weekend as the Obama puppy! His name is Buddy, and the boys are very happy. I haven't met him yet but hope to get over there one day this week. He's an 8-week old Black Lab.

A lab puppy?! I have a very soft spot for Labs and Cockers. I love the name Buddy, wasn’t that also the name of Bill Clinton’s lab?

I put About Face on my Amazon wish list. I have to make a dent on my stack of waiting to-be-read books before I buy another book.
