This is such a pretty campanile. The San Vidal bell tower is older than the rebuilt church, or at least its foundations are. This tower was damaged by fire in 1105, by earthquake in 1347, restored again in 1680, and then again in 2000.
Over the door is a 15th century relief in tondo of St. Gregory with a dove, a really nice piece of public art.
Here it is, visible from the Grand Canal~

Hi Annie, it's a beautiful Campanile. Your photos are wonderful, especially the shot from the Grand Canal. That's a cool looking relief too. For being made in the 15th Century, it seems to be in really good shape.
Thanks so much for sharing.

Kathy, thanks! You never know how pics will turn out when you're taking them from the vaporetto, but I like that one too. Hope you're doing well.

So beautiful! I've walked past many times but never realized the age of the bell tower -- astounding!
The Canaletto painting is also remarkable, it's hard to imagine a time when a stone mason's yard would clutter up what are today such elegant squares!

Hi Annie, I have just returned home from my annual pilgrimage to Venice. Sultry, sparkling, scintillating to the senses...as expected from La Serenissima. Visited the basilica for the gazillionth time and whispered a prayer from all of us to our dear S. Marco. Keep up your great work!

Sandra, I agree about the Canaletto. I love looking at his paintings because so much of Venice is unchanged but there are little details that are very different.
Christian, thanks so much for the report and the prayer. I'm happy that you had a wonderful time. I bet it was fun to see some of the Biennale art scattered around. Cheers!
