Churches in Venice

Bridges galore in Venice! But how many bridges are there in the city of canals? If you google that question, you'll get many different answers starting at 387 and going up. Wikipedia says that the city with the world-record for the most bridges is Pittsburgh, PA which has 446 bridges, 3 more than Venice has. So maybe Venice has 443? I'm not sure anyone knows for sure, and counting them would be such a challenge.

Anyway, here's a random look at a few of Venice's bridges. Many of the bridges are made of stone like this one below.

This small wooden bridge leads into Poste Vecie, the oldest restaurant in Venice, serving since 1500.

Here are a few shrines in Venice, all dedicated to Mary but each one unique.

This one is on the lighthouse on the island of Murano~

This one, with a mosaic Mary inside, has metal shutters with an "M" embossed on them. Once the sun goes down, someone in the neighborhood comes and closes the shutters.

I love the textures of the wall behind this shrine and also the colors inside. This one has an "M" too.

Many shrines have floral tributes but this one has a simple green sprig~

There are many many shrines in Venice and I haven't found them all yet!

Venice's cemetery island, San Michele in Isola, is the most lovely graveyard I've ever visited. With all those cypress trees and so many flowers, it's a beautiful and peaceful place.

There are two churches on this island. The photo below shows the 19th century church of San Cristoforo which is covered with mosaics inside.

The other one is the magnificent Renaissance church of San Michele in Isola.

I bet you all thought I'd be doing "V is for Venice" but that was too obvious. :) Instead we are going to the Big Easy this week.

I don't know anything about VooDoo but I saw lots of signs of it in New Orleans. I didn't buy a voodoo doll when I was there but did take some photos of them.

Well, it's definitely one of my favorite things to photograph. These first two were taken at the NC Museum of Art in Raleigh.

The first is one of the reflecting pools outside the museum, and the second is in the museum restaurant called Iris.

X is the first letter that really had me stumped.

But then, lo and behold, the solution arrived in my email box this past weekend - this photo of my nephew on his birthday.

He turned 10 years old, and 10 in Roman Numerals is X.
Isn't it nice that there's an X on his shirt?
And one of his birthday presents was an Xbox 360 (whatever that is)!

A few months ago, I spent the day in Winston-Salem, NC. Like many cities in North Carolina, Winston-Salem is in the midst of a downtown urban renewal program. I love seeing cities like this coming back to life. Winston's downtown arts district has lots of galleries and murals on every block. It was fun to walk around and see it all. I love public art!

This was my favorite. Love the colors, love the way the bird is flying through that door.
