The theme for week's photohunt is protect(ion).
I really had hard time with this and had to think outside the box to come up with something. Annie suggested using the Japanese fishing shrine from my previous post, and I wish I've saved that for the theme, but since I've posted about it already, I'll go with something different here:
Castle Sant Angelo in Rome, one of Rome's main visitors' attractions.
Located on the Tiber river, and close to the Vatican, Castle Sant' Angelo now serves as a national museum .Exhibits range from Renaissance paintings to antique military weapons. One can also go up to the terrace and admire the magnificent views of Rome.
It was originally a mausoleum, begun by Hadrian, and completed in 193 AD, to provide a final resting place for the Emperor and his successors. When Rome was later endangered, however, and due to its strategic location, Hadrianeum, as it was called, became the strongest fortress in Rome, and was converted into a castle to defend Rome, and provide protection to the city.
Castle Sant' Angelo had also served as a Papal residence and it is connected to the Vatican by an underground passage.
It is a beautiful and unique building that is worth the visit.
Happy weekend everyone!
