PhotoHunt: walking

The theme for this week's photohunt is walking.

I do a lot of walking and hiking, so my choices are endless. I decided to go with walking on the Appian Way in Rome; my favorite city.

The Appian Way, or Via Appia, is the oldest Roman road, running from Rome to Campania and southern Italy. It was named after the censor Appius Claudius Caecus, who began working on it in 312 BC. To start with, Via Appia ran only 212 km(132 miles) from Rome south-southeastward to ancient Capua in Campania, but by about 244 BC it had been extended another 370 km (230 miles) southeastward to reach the port of Brundisium (Brindisi), situated in the “heel” of Italy and lying along the Adriatic Sea.

My original plan was to rent a bicycle and bike along, but seeing the cobblestones, I thought walking would be "smoother".The road was made mainly of large stones and a softer gravel that was compacted between the rocks cemented it.

Walking along Via Appia, one is surrounded by ancient buildings, tombs and walls; evidences of existence of the ancient republic. Parts of the road are still in use today, and some sites and tombs can be visited. It is one of the major attractions for visitors and a favorite destination for Romans on weekends.

I do hope you’ll stop by mine - have a great weekend!

Good choice on walking! I don't think it will be easy to cycle on cobblestone. :)

Love your post for this week. :)

I, too, do my fair share of walking. Haven't done near enough in Europe though -- and have yet to set foot in Italy (if you don't count airports where I've been on transit)!

Aloha from Maui, Hawaii!!

Great post for this week's PH theme. Enjoyed browsing through your photos.

Hope you'll have time to visit mines as well!

Hi Candi, Thanks for the memory lane post. It's been a few years since I followed that path trying to see how many of the ancient paving stones I could step on. Every step feels like a connection to the past, doesn't it?

What a beautiful place to walk. Thanks so much for showing us the sites. Happy weekend.
