The theme for this week's photohunt is flags.
Browsing my photos, I realized that I have many photos of flags from many places we have visited and lived. Flags fly high above government buildings, historic monuments, and many other structures. While we were in Thailand, we have noticed that Buddha temples display two different flags; one of them we recognized as the Kingdom of Thailand flag, the other was a yellow with a red wheel. When we asked around, we learned that the yellow flag is the Buddhism flag and every Buddhist temple is marked with one.

Here is an example of Wat Pon On in Chiang Mai, with both flags soaring high.

Wat Pon On was a temple that we just happened to stumble upon walking around the city of Chiang Mai. We thought it was really beautiful. Here are some more photos we took of the temple.

Off the topic note:It was such a sad day yesterday, Farrah Fawcett lost her courageous battle with cancer, and the world lost the King of Pop; Michael Jackson. Let their souls rest in peace.

Hi Candi, great choices for this week's theme on Flags. I don't think I've seen the flag of Thailand before and it was interesting to learn about he Buddishm flag.
I agree with your comments on Farrah and Michael J. Very sad news.

What a beautiful temple! Love your pics, and yes it was a very sad day yesterday. I feel like a bit of my youth is gone forever with both of their deaths.

Great pics -- and yes, the deaths of not one but two individuals who made their impact on the world in a single day yesterday really did come as a shock.

Wonderful photos. These temples are such magical places.
I watched a documentary about Michael Jackson last night. He was such a gentle soul and wonderful musician; so sad to see him go so young. I feel for his children.
Hope you have a nice weekend. It is HOT here in NC!

Saint3, we never had any problems with gems dealers while in Thailand. Tuk Tuks drivers were annoying in Bangkok though.
Annie, I was watching a documentary on MJ too yesterday. So sad, such a talented and sensitive soul. I too feel for his kids. One thing for sure, life will never be the same for them.

The yellow Buddhist flag is beautiful. Do you know the significance of yellow? The monks were yellow also don't they? The temple is also beautiful and very serene.

Marta,
I researched the significance of the yellow color in Buddhism, and found this website
. This is what it said about yellow:
"Yellow is has the highest symbolic value in Buddhism through its link with the saffron robes of monks.
This color, previously worn by criminals, was chosen by Gautam Buddha as a symbol of his humility and separation from materialist society. It thus signifies renunciation, desirelessness, and humility.
Yellow is the color of earth, and thus a symbol of rootedness and the equanimity of the earth."
