Maui's Mama's Fish House

I've been meaning to write this post over a month now,but somehow I kept getting distracted.Oh well, better late than never.

For my birthday, Bill surprised me with a lunch at Mama's Fish House, one of Maui's most famous restaurants. We've lived on Maui, on and off ,for over a year and a half together and been wanting to try it, and finally we pulled it off-or should I say Bill pulled it off?

On their website, the legend of Mama's Fish House goes like this:

While sailing across the South Pacific in the late 1950's, the young Christenson family embraced the lifestyle of old Polynesia, discovering ways of preparing fish and living the aloha spirit. They settled on Maui in 1963 and in 1973, Mama's Fish House was born-Maui's first fresh fish restaurant.
Nestled in a beautiful coconut grove on a secluded white sand beach, this covered beach house restaurant is a memory of Old Polynesia on Maui's North Shore. Polynesian artifacts, unique local wood working, spectacular flower arrangements, and original artwork define the interior, while an award-winning menu teamed with unpretentious service and aloha spirit makes Mama's Fish House an unforgettable restaurant experience in Hawaii.

When we got there, we could not help but be awed. The views are amazing during the day. The atmosphere is pure Hawaiian, the service is great, the menu is exquisite with fish and seafood dishes from all over the world, the prices are high and the experience is divine.

We started off with lobster guacamole with sweet potato crisps, heavenly!

For main entry, Bill went to Thailand (again ) with Ahi, Ono and Mahimahi sauteed in Panang Curry and coconut milk, I had to try it, and it was delicious!

I decided to go to France with the most delicious Bouillabaisse I've ever had: Mahimahi, shrimp, clams, calamari and angel-hair pasta simmered in a tomato-saffron broth, with garlic rouille.  To die for!

We finished our meal with yummy banana and vanilla bean ice cream, which was devoured before we had a chance to take a photo!

I believe we've had our best restaurant meal on Maui at Mama's Fish House, I highly recommend it.

I go to Mama's each time I visit Maui. I have to save up for it and be prepared to foot the bill. LOL.

Have you tried Haile Maile also? Palma introduced me to that one and I love it too.

Eden, I know what you mean about footing the bill. But to be fair, the food is top notch.

We've never tried Hale Mali, Kim was saying positive things about it when we met her. And I also heard good things about it from others, we'll have to try it one day, won't be this time though:)
We don't really eat out a lot, we are both good cooks and we can't justify spending that much money eating out, when we can cook amazing food at home for way less. We save the difference to travel:)

Hi Candi, this restaurant sounds really fabulous. The food, service and view. What a treat and very special birthday surprise. I liked how you traveled the world in your selections. All the dishes looks really delicious.

Thanks for the great tip!

Wow, that is some amazing looking food. Looks like you had a great birthday!

I don't eat out a lot either. Love eating out when I travel though!

Candi, that looks fantastic. I really have to visit Hawaii, it sounds (and looks) to beautiful to be true!

Safe travels in your move back to the mainland!

I love that restaurant-the setting is just beautiful. But it can be expensive. I can't remember how much we paid for French-press Kona coffee, but it was something like $9 per cup! Didn't realize the price when we ordered it.

Thanks so much for this post and review! Now I know where I am eating the next time I go to Maui :)

Barb Cabot:

What a special birthday dinner! Everything you ordered looked beyond fabulous! Great post and photos.
