Photo Hunt Archives

September 6, 2008

I decided this week to join Photo Hunt. To participate, a weekly subject is posted, and you look through your photos and post something that you think represents the subject. You can be as creative in that interpretation as you would like. This is going to be a challenge for me, as I've only had my camera since last year. So that doesn't give me a huge stock to choose from. I enjoy photos and think that by joining Photo Hunt I will now spend more time in learning about the art of photography.

My first attempt is with the subject of STRING. I couldn't find any photos that had string in them, but decided that the line in my shrimp pots would suffice.

This weeks PhotoHunt theme is wild. There are lots of things around Alaska that I could have used as "wild". I decided to go with a photo that my husband took of two bears. They were just play fighting when this photo was taken.

September 20, 2008

I couldn't decide which photo to post this week for "road", so I decided to show 2 very contrasting photos. The first photo is a crowded street in Florence. The second photo is a road just down from my house, taken this week as the trees are changing colors.

This week's theme for PhotoHunt is "view". While trying to decide what to post, I looked through photos I had taken on vacation of Italy, Bahamas, Bermuda, etc. and saw beautiful views. But I am lucky enough to live in one of the most beautiful places there is, Alaska, and I decided to post photos of views from my own house.

This first photo is taken out my living room window on the south side of the house.

This second photo is taken out my dining room window on the north side of the house.

This next photo I thought was funny-it is of relatives looking at the view out of our windows.

And I decided to post one last photo, which I just took out the window in front of me as I type this. As you can see, fall is here and winter is just around the corner.

Enjoy the view!

This week's photo hunt theme is sad. This picture represents sad to me because it is my beloved Abby, who passed away a week after this picture was taken, which will be 2 years this coming February. Abby was a very sweet Westie, and we miss her dearly. When she was 9 or 10, she developed pulmonary fibrosis, then in the last months of her life, lymphoma. When I look at this photo, although she just looks like a puppy to me, I can see that she just looks tired. She was a trooper until the end. Sad...losing a pet who is a member of your family.

Another Saturday, and time for another picture for Photo Hunter. This week's theme is lazy. I have plenty of photos of me being lazy, but I decided on a photo of a bear instead. Looks like he's really enjoying laying on the log. And in case you don't recognize him, he's the same bear that was in my scary photo a few weeks ago.

This week the theme for PhotoHunter was "family". I didn't have any current photos of my family, so I decided to use a different representation of family than what we normally think of. The dictionary gives an alternate meaning of family as "a group of related things or people". So I decided to use a photo of related things. This photo was taken at Piazza Campo dei Fiori in Rome. This is a "family" of spices.

October 25, 2008

It's Saturday and time for another PhotoHunter photo. This week's theme is scary. I think the financial situation we are in right now is VERY SCARY.

November 1, 2008

This week's theme for PhotoHunter is "blue". I found these photos my husband had taken. They are of icebergs, and show the lovely blue tint that some have. The photos were taken in Prince William Sound, on a boat trip from Whittier to Valdez.

November 8, 2008

This week's theme for PhotoHunter was together. This photo is of my husband and me in Venice in September 2007. We've been married for 25 years, and dated for 5 before that, so I think we qualify for "together".

November 15, 2008

This week's PhotoHunter theme was "ruin". I chose 3 photos from Rome. The first is the Temple of Antonius Pius & Faustina at the Forum, and the next two are the Colosseo. I can't wait to go back and see more ruins, as it is just amazing to me that these are standing after so many years.

PhotoHunt - "Reflection"

This week's PhotoHunt theme is "reflection". I couldn't decide which photo to post, so I decided to show four.

This first photo was taken at the beginning of September on a drive from Anchorage to Homer. A beautiful fall day with a reflection of trees on a lake.

This second photo is the reflection of a sunrise while we were on our boat in Prince William Sound.

This third photo was a beautiful day in Prince William Sound, taken while we were anchored in a cove with several other boats.

This last photo is the reflection on the shiny black surface of two gondolas in Venice.

The theme for PhotoHunt this week is "metal". As I was going through my photos, the only pictures I could find which fit the theme were from Italy.

This first photo is from the Catitoline Museum and shows the statue of Boy With Thorn. The statue depicts a boy pulling a thorn from his foot and is one of a few large-scale bronze works to survive from antiquity. It was very influential on artists in the Italian Renaissance, and later was one of the works Napoleon proudly confiscated. After his defeat, it was returned to the Capitoline collection.

This second photo was also taken in the Capitoline Museum, and is the Capitoline Wolf. This bronze statue, housed here since 1473, is one of the icons of the founding of Rome. When the twins' father Numitor was overthrown by his brother Amulius, according to the founding myth, he ordered them to be cast into the Tiber. They were rescued by a she-wolf who cared for them until a herdsman, Faustulus, found and raised them. The statue was long thought to be an Etruscan work of the 5th century BCE, with the twins added in the late 15th century. However, radiocarbon and thermoluminescence dating has found that it was probably manufactured in the 13th century CE.

This last photo was again taken in the same museum, and is the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius.

This week's theme for PhotoHunter is breakfast. I didn't have any unique breakfast photos, and so I decided to take a photo of what I eat most days-oatmeal. Today mine was made special by the addition of a persimmon and sliced almonds. I also made myself a capuccino. A warm and healthy way to start the day.

This week's theme for photohunter is "favorite". I decided to show some photos we took last year on our trip to Harbour Island in the Bahamas. This was a beautiful island, with a pink sand beach that ran for longer than 3 miles. Not your typical beach-the most people we ever saw on the beach was maybe 10. You can't rent a car on the island, and so you rent a golf cart to get around. We started our vacation on Paradise Island at Atlantis (lucky me, I won a trip through my work there!). It was a very nice resort, but lots of people. We like quiet, and big resorts just really aren't our thing. After the trip ended at Atlantis, we extended our vacation by taking a ferry to Harbour Island for a few extra day. Peaceful, nothing to do but lay on the beach, lay in a hammock at our lodging, enjoy a nice glass of wine while enjoying the view, etc. etc.

This first photo is me standing in the beautiful clear waters. This was the opposite side of the island as the beach, but during this tide you could walk for what seemed like forever in shallow water.

This next photo is of my husband and I having dinner at a great Italian restaurant on the island, called Aqua Pazza. We ate there 3 nights. The food was excellent, and look at the view...

This last photo is taken at the Bed & Breakfast we stayed at. The area shown is the patio where we had breakfast each morning.

December 20, 2008

I almost forgot to post a photo today. The theme this week for PhotoHunter was "wide". This is a photo of my husband (I know, not the most flattering picture) with a LingCod he caught-you can see how wide their mouth is. The second photo shows the fish while it's still in the water, and again shows its wide mouth.

December 27, 2008

The theme for this week's Photo Hunter is "squeaky". The squeakiest thing in my life right now is Bella, our Westie puppy. She is a sweetheart, but has her moments. Her "squeaky" times are when she crawls under the coffee table, and does a nice high-pitched bark at nothing.
Here she is on Christmas day with one of her new toys Santa brought her.

January 3, 2009

(My photo is blurry, but if you'll read what temperature it is outside you'll realize my hands were shaking from the cold!)

The theme for today's PhotoHunter is "hope". We are about to set a new record for the number of days it hasn't reached 0, and I'm not happy about it. As you can see, it was quite cold at our house this morning. But, I have HOPE that it is going to get warmer soon. And when it finally does, 10 above is going to feel balmy!

January 10, 2009

The theme for this week's Photo Hunter is "aftermath". At first I was thinking about the tornado that hit my parents house over 10 years ago, but I don't have any photos that I took, only newspaper articles. I still hadn't decided what photo to use until tonight. Then I came up with the perfect "aftermath" photo-the wrapper remains of the Amaretti di Saronno that I ate today. I must admit it, I have a weakness. I have no willpower when it comes to certain things. And one of those things are crunchy, almond cookies. I make a point not to buy them, because I can eat an entire box all at once. But I needed them for Palma's Sunday Slow Soupers recipe for next week, so I was forced to buy them. And of course I just had to sample one on the way home. And the one became two, then three, then as you can see, a few more. Okay, maybe I like this kind of aftermath.

January 17, 2009

This week's theme for PhotoHunter is "hat". I decided to show a photo of my husband wearing a hat that he bought in a small native village in SW Alaska. The name of the village is Tuntutuliak, an Eskimo village where the main language is Yup'ik. In the Yup'ik language, Tuntutuliak means "the land of many caribou". The hat is made of beaver and ringed seal. It is very warm. He doesn't wear it out much, but it sure keeps him warm when he does.

January 24, 2009

This week's PhotoHunter theme is "chipped". Unfortunately, this is not a pleasant representation for us of chipped. In January, during the cold spell we had, our heater quit working once and our pipes froze twice. Then, because of how cold it had been, we just couldn't force ourselves to get into the hot tub. We hadn't used it for probably a month, and hadn't put chemicals in either, so the cover was never raised. Then last week, we saw some water leaking out, and raised the cover to find an ice cube(a rather large one!). The heater had quit working, and the water had frozen. The photo you see is of my husband chipping out the ice. He chipped out as much as possible, then filled it with hot water to melt the rest. He then drained it, and refilled it. He replaced the heater, and is still in the process of finding out how many pipes froze and cracked. He's chipping away the insulation to expose pipes in various areas, and slowly patching/repairing those cracked pipes. It's a long process, and he still might have to call in the repair men, but at $85/hour, and no telling how many hours/days it would take them to repair, at least it's a start. This has been one tough winter. On top of that, they raised our rates for gas. We got our gas bill today, and it was more than double what it was last month! And the rates were only supposed to have increased by 20%.

January 31, 2009

I almost forgot about Photo Hunter this week. The theme for the week is "Furry". My husband had my camera today, so I had to look through photos I had already taken. I found this one which shows my puppy next to a stuffed sheep that we bought in Santa Fe many years ago. (If I remember correctly, it was made by one of the Indian tribes there. They skin the sheep, eat the meat, then they make a wooden mold to which the skin is attached to. It has its real horns and ears (you can't really see the horns in this photo.)

February 7, 2009

This week's theme for Photo Hunt is "bridge". I took this picture in Rome, of a bridge over the Tiber River. Brings back memories every time I look at it.

February 14, 2009

This week's theme for PhotoHunt is "Nautical". I thought I'd show a photo of our boat. Notice the name - "Scott Free". My husband came up with that one. His name is Scott, and he enjoys the freedom the boat gives him. (Plus the name makes people wonder what he got away with!) It's not a huge boat (24 feet), but it's big enough for the two of us to go out on for a few days, and sleep on. We usually take two inflatable kayaks with us. You'll see one on top, and my husband is in the other one taking this photo.

February 21, 2009

The theme for this week's PhotoHunt is "warm". As I looked through my photos, I realized I had lots of photos that represented "cold", but not so many for "warm". So I decided to show a variety that represent warm to me.

My puppy Bella in front of the fire (she was so little then-she now weighs over 10 lbs!).

Fishing in the Bahamas on a very warm day.

My husband and me at the beach in Harbour Island.

I couldn't leave out the food-A warm apple pie.

And last, but not least, warm chocolate cookies.

February 28, 2009

This week's theme for PhotoHunt is "thankful". I am thankful for many things, but this time of year I am very thankful for the amount of daylight we are gaining. Today we gained 5 minutes and 44 seconds. Yeah!

March 7, 2009

The theme for this week's PhotoHunter is "space". I posted a couple of photos from Juneau, AK earlier this week, and decided to post some taken from the airplane as I was leaving Juneau. I think these have a perfect representation of the meaning of space. It is just so vast, and there is so much empty space, when flying above snow-covered mountains, glaciers, and water. I always look down and think about all of that space that no one has ever stepped foot on.

March 14, 2009

Notice the blurry photo? That's the way my mind was feeling. I woke up at 3am, couldn't go back to sleep, and finally went downstairs at 3:30am. I tried to sleep, no luck, so got up and fixed a cappucino and got my book and then thought about what photo I could use for PhotoHunt. This week's theme was "four". Then I noticed the clock, and snapped this photo. It's now 8am, and I still have that blurry, awful feeling you have when getting up in the middle of the night. It's going to be a very long day.

March 21, 2009

The theme for this week's PhotoHunt is "yellow". As I looked through photos, I wondered what to show-a fish with a yellow eye, or a pretty yellow building in Italy? So I decided to have the contrast, and show both.

This photo is of a type rockfish that we call "yelloweye". It's a little hard to see in this photo, but its eye is yellow.

This photo is of a yellow building that we saw in a piazza just off of Strada Nova in Venice.

April 4, 2009

This week's theme for PhotoHunt is "stripes". I thought an appropriate photo was this one I took in front of the Vatican of the Swiss Guards.

Here is what Wikipedia has to say about Swiss Guards:

The theme for this week's PhotoHunt is "Triangle". I decided to show a photo of a triangular piece, and a triangular-shaped bite of Raspberry Tart.

April 18, 2009

The theme for this week's PhotoHunt is "Purple". I've decided to show three photos this week.

This first photo is of purple columbines in my garden (unfortunately, not from this year yet).

This next photo was taken in the Bahamas, at Atlantis Resort. The colorful Bohamian dancers are wearing a lot of purple.

This last photo is of a Blackberry tart, with the lovely purplish-black color of the berries.

The theme for this week's PhotoHunt is "protect(ion). I had a very hard time finding some photos that would fit this theme. Then I came across some photos that I took in Siena in 2006. We were very lucky to be in Siena during the month of September, because the beautiful mosiac floors in the Duomo di Siena are uncovered during that time . They were absolutely breathtaking, and most were in such perfect condition. That is because of the PROTECTION that they receive during most of the year.

The theme for this week's PhotoHunt is "Walking". I chose 3 photos of places where we(my husband and I) have walked.

This first photo is taken at Eagle River Nature Center, here in Alaska. This is located just 3 miles from my house. We began walking Bella, our West Highland Terrier, there on most evenings once the days began getting longer and we had daylight after work. This picture was taken on March 7th. It's a beautiful location. I haven't been there since we got back from Hawaii-I think it's probably a mudpuddle now, so I will probably have to wait a little longer before taking a white dog on walks there.

This next photo was taken last August in California at Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve near Guerneville, in the Russian River Region.

This last photo was taken in Italy in 2006. It is a road we walked in Civitella Marritima, a little village in Southern Tuscany where we enjoyed a wonderful week's stay at Casina di Rosa.

May 16, 2009

The theme for this week's PhotoHunt is "Painted". I decided to show photos that I took on Harbour Island, a very small island in the Bahamas. The houses were very colorfully painted, as were various signs and buildings also. Sorry the photos aren't better-as I post them here, I realize every one is crooked. Hum, I wonder what I had been doing before taking these pictures...

The theme for this week's PhotoHunt is "book". I couldn't think of just one book to show, so thought I'd show a variety.

This is the book I just finished reading. David Lebovitz has such a humorous style of writing. It's filled with very funny stories and wonderful-sounding recipes. I ordered it from Amazon months ago and so I got it as soon as it was released.

These are the three books I read before The Sweet Life in Paris". I enjoyed all 3 of them. The Sharper Your Knife, The Less You Cry is about a woman who decides to get out of the corporate rat race(well, her job was actually eliminated), takes her savings and moves to Paris and goes to Le Cordon Bleu cooking school. The Homemade Life is written by Molly Wizenberg, and she tells stories of her life and shares lots of recipes with us. The last book, A Vineyard in Tuscany is about a couple from New York who buy a dwelling and 70 acres in Tuscany and start a winery. This book made me want to move to Tuscany (or at least drink a lot of wine made there).

June 20, 2009

The theme for this week's PhotoHunt is "creamy". I decided to post a photo of one of my favorite ice creams from "The Perfect Scoop". The flavor is Malted Milk.

June 27, 2009

The theme for this week's PhotoHunt is "flag". I've shown this photo before, but it's a picture I took in Homer, Alaska of an eagle sitting on top of a tree next to an American flag. The image is a little blurry, but I still love this photo.

July 4, 2009

The theme for this week's PhotHunt is "pink". I was looking through my photos, thinking I would post a photo of a pink rose, when I came across these photos of Bella when she was 8 weeks old. Doesn't she have a cute pink belly, pink pads on her paws, and pink ears?

July 11, 2009

The theme for this week's PhotoHunt is "garbarge". I looked through my photos, and couldn't find any appropriate pictures. Then I decided to take a picture of my own garbarge. The sad thing about this photo are the glass bottles in the trash. Earlier this year, Anchorage decided to no longer recycle glass because of the high cost/little revenue that is involved. It is a shame. In our small household of two people, we produce a lot of glass waste. The trash is usually filled with more wine bottles than the one that's shown here (we made up for the wine with Mike's Hard Lemonaid!).

July 18, 2009

The theme for this week's PhotoHunt is "rock(s)". I decided to show two photos.

This first photo was taken on Maui of a rock arch.

This second photo was taken it Tuscany, in the village Civitella Marritima. I loved the rock or stone buildings.

August 1, 2009

The theme for this week's PhototHunt is entertainment. This morning Bella wanted to play ball. I decided this was her entertainment to play, and my entertainment watching her play.

August 15, 2009

The theme for this week's Photohunt is "articificial". I'm showing a very ugly photo, but one I think is very appropriate. It's getting close to fall in Alaska. The days are getting shorter, and soon it's going to be time to get out the Light Box to help in preventing Seasonal Affective Disorder. That's unfortunately one of the disadvantages of living in an are where in the winter time you get limited sunlight. Here's what Mayo Clinic has to say: "A light therapy box is a device used mainly to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression. Light therapy mimics outdoor light. This causes a biochemical change in your brain that lifts your mood and reduces symptoms of seasonal affective disorder. Light therapy boxes are also known as light boxes, bright light therapy boxes and phototherapy boxes."

August 22, 2009

The theme for this week's PhotoHunt is "ripples". I almost forgot to participate, as I've been out of town for a few days. My husband and I went out on our boat out of Whittier, in Prince William Sound. We take inflatable kayaks with us, and this is a photo of us paddling around the cove we were anchored at for the evening. It shows the ripples in the water quite well.

August 28, 2009

The theme for this week's PhotoHunt is "surprise". I took these photos in April from the top of Haleakala Volcano on Maui. I was surprised at the beautiful colors I saw.

September 5, 2009

The theme for this week's PhotoHunt is "orange". Here's my orange-a bucket full of shrimp heads. This is the not so fun part of shrimping-you have to rip the heads off the shrimp. Of well, the shrimp tastes great and the heads make a pretty photo.

September 12, 2009

The theme for this week's PhotoHunt is "electric". I couldn't find anything that fit the theme in my photos. I am feeling very uncreative today. As I sat at my desk, trying to figure out what I could post, the only thing I could come up with was a photo of all of the cords to my "electric" gadgets under my desk. Computer, fax machine, 2 phones, a light. Don't even have the chargers for my Blackberry plugged in here.

I have to find some creativity soon.....

September 19, 2009

The theme for this week's PhotoHunt is "Upside-Down". I didn't take this photo-the camera was mounted on the Bi-plane. But the photo is of my husband during one of his many skydives. He was jumping out of a bi-plane, which turned upside-down, and then he was able to drop from the plane. He made over 800 jumps during his time, and gave it up a few years ago. And yes, I've jumped-6 times. And you couldn't pay me to do it again!

October 3, 2009

The theme for this week's PhotoHunt is "words". Just got back this week from a short trip to Washington DC, and thought I'd show the words that are written above the Abraham Lincoln Memorial.

October 10, 2009

I'm not a very athletic person, and I have no interest in watching sports on TV. I do go hiking some, and I do cross-country ski some in the winter, which I guess could be considered sports. I do fish, again a sport. But a decided to show a photo I just came across-the first skydive I ever did. I think I mentioned earlier that you couldn't pay me to do it again. This was the first ever (I've done it 6 times). You can see the static line hooked to me-it automatically pulls your chute open when you jump from the plane. The quality of this photo isn't good, so I'm not sure if you can see it, but I am so nervous and tense that you can see that tension in my outstretched arms.

October 16, 2009

This week we are able to share any photo that we choose. I decided to share 3 photos that I took in Sept 2007 in Italy. We're going back again next fall, and I'm looking forward to it. Looking at photos like these really makes me long to go back.

This first photo was taken in a church in Montepulciano.

This next photo was taken of the village above Sant'Antimo Abbey.

And this last photo was taken of Porto Santo Stefano.
