Zennor

I didn't realise it was so long since I last came on here. The cataract removal from my right eye has achieved more than I then thought. This Wednesday I should get a prescription for new reading glasses and that will end what was once a very anxious period.

I've done most of the planning and reservations for Pam and our friend to spend a few days in Gothenburg, Sweden later this month and I'm starting to get excited about the Færoes in July.

Now to the title! We went to Zennor on our first trip to St Just and had looked forward to going again. It is a very small village off the road from St Just to St Ives, just inland from Zennor Head, a notable viewpoint on the coast path. It has two very different buildings of note.

The first is the church. This is a fine granite structure like most in the neighbourhood with a good sundial near the entrance. Its distinguishing features are a bench with a mermaid carved on the side; exquisite pew carvings; an ancient font; a squint (diagonal view allowing the main altar area to be seen from a transept.

The other building is the pub, The Tinners' Arms. Apparently it was built for the builders of the church to live, eat and drink. It is a very welcoming place with a wood fire at both ends of the long bar. Food, including soups, are cooked to order.

I'm always fascinated to see mermaids in churches - they aren't really what I think of as traditional symbolism! There are a bunch of them in the churches of Venice too.
