Good Friday

I thought of myself as a pretty good Catholic. I am not too sure after I went to Good Friday service tonight.

There was Mass and Veneration of the Cross. People lined up to genuflect and show reverence - some kissed the cross. Somehow, I can't remember this ritual ever...

I know I am forgetting things after my chemo treatments... so perhaps this is one that I have totally forgotten. It is that or I have never really attended Good Friday service in the past, or at least it has been a very long time since I attended one... Maybe because Good Friday is not a holy day of obligation!

A friend of mine sent an email last Thursday that forwarded a message from his brother that said "go out and wash some apostles' feet"... That I remember from Holy Thursday service ...

Dear Eden, Congratulations on your blog. I'm on spring break too and enjoying the catch up news with you. Your chain email response was so hilarious. Keep up the good writing. I'm one of your readers now!

Sandra:

Yeah, I'd be a bit baffled by the cross-kissing...I think I was raised in a less traditional Catholic culture! I grew up in the 1960s and 70s when folk Mass (complete with guitars and folk singing) was the norm. Think Godspell or Jesus Christ Superstar. Yikes!

Sorry to hear that you've been in chemo, Eden. I'll have to read more of your bio....

Eden,

When I taught in a Catholic school, we had a very young, cute priest who was a friend of mine. He used to make the teachers sit on the altar on Holy Thursday for the feet washing part. Then he would tickle our feet, and we couldn't laugh. They we'd go out drinking afterwards! How irreverent!

Eden:

Palma,
That is the kind of priest I want in my parish. LOL. Right now, we have someone who wants to go back to Latin and who seem always cranky when doing his homily.

Sandra,
My family once attended Easter mass in Honolulu that actually had a Lazer show played to Jesus Christ Superstar music. My kids still talk about it, 20 some years later. They want that kind of Mass too. Oh, and regarding my chemo, that was last year and everything is ok now.

Barb,
How nice of you to leave a comment here. I hope that you are enjoying your spring break. And thank you for the encouraging message.
