Mothers' Day Weekend Tradition with an American Indian Twist

Long time ago, I managed the Native American Studies for my school district. It educated me on the Native American culture and I love many things about it. I used to coordinate staff development with emphasis on the sensitivity towards the Native American diverse culture. Along side that learning we hosted (well, my school district, with me doing most of the work, of course) a fun event - a POW WOW. But that was a long time ago. When I left that position, the POW WOW is history for my district. Anyway, I probably am the only Filipino who coordinates POW WOWs anyway. :) (Notice present tense - I may do it again someday.)

Ever since that time, my daughter and I started our own "tradition". We attend a POW WOW during the Mothers' Day weekend. Stanford University (across the bridge from me) hosts the largest POW WOW in Northern California every Mothers' Day weekend.

My daughter and I have been attending this POW WOW for a few years now. The past Mothers' Day weekend was no exception. I seem to go to Native American events a lot that people think I am Native or of American Indian descent.

We eat flat bread tacos - Yummy! We go shopping for silver jewelry. She loves artsy silver jewelry. So we eat and spend like any normal Mom and daughter team. LOL... this year my daughter in law joined us... as did my son and grandchildren.

Here's my daughter and daughter in law shopping.

There are some Native dancers too ... These boys were trying to get me to buy off a CD they bought and did not like. :)

We had a fun afternoon and met my other son (who was at work) for a nice Mothers' Day dinner. Great day!

Very interesting and I love the photos! I went to a Pow Wow here in NC many years ago and really enjoyed it, especially the dancing. I'd like to go to another one sometime.

Sound so nice! Great photos, too. Too bad the school district discontinued the tradition you started.

Eden, that was a great blog entry. And what a cool Mother/Daughter tradition!
