Salang Pass Afghani Restaurant

I live in a town / city where there is a high concentration of Afghani immigrants. We have a part of our town called "Little Kabul". Lucky us, we have the opportunity to enjoy the Afghani culture and its food... Yummm... So here is a little peek at one of the Afghani restaurants in my area... It is a small restaurant with some "take-off-your-shoes-and-sit-on- the- cushions- on- the- floor- sitting" as well as regular sitting. Being old, I opted for the table and chairs this time...

My daughter and I went out to Salang Pass Restaurant tonight. There was a review of this restaurant this weekend on the PBS TV Channel 9 station's Check Please Bay Area. The three foodies / program guests from the San Francisco area came all the way to Fremont to try out this restaurant... All three had good reviews of the food. I have dined here a few times before before but thought we'd try it again...

We started out with one of my favorites here - the Borani Kadoo. It is pumpkin sauteed in and seasoned with garlic and topped with a special yogurt sauce. The restaurant gives the diners some salad and naan (bread) to start with, so I had the naan with the Borani Kadoo... delicious!

We then had our entree... My daughter picked Quabili Pallow. It is described as baked brown basmati rice with seasonned lamb and topped with raisins and juilllene carrots.

I love this and have had it before. When it came, my daughter said, it was not what she had intended to order... An adventurous soul that she is, she tried the dish and enjoyed it. I shared it with her. (I have to have this each time I visit Salang Pass.)

Since my daughter ordered my very favorite dish, I ventured out and ordered something new - Mantoo. It is Afghani style dumplings stuffed with ground beef, onions, and seasonings. It is also deliciously topped with that yogurt sauce...

This picture does not do it justice but the dish was really good. My daughter and I did share this dish as well. The portions are generous, so I have some of each of the two dishes for lunch tomorrow... an extended enjoyment of the delicious fare... P.S. My daughter is the one with the manicured hands... :)

Donna:

I saw Salang Pass on Check Please Bay Area. The food looks delish, unfortunately, I live too far (Marin County) to give it a try. Sounds like you and your daughter had a yummy meal!

Donna,

If you ever find yourself on this side of the bay, do try to stop and dine at Salang Pass. My daughter and I did have a very enjoyable dinner out and service was great too.

tourmama:

Eden - It would be great to have this as a restaurant review on the main ST pages, too. Great review, and great photos --- has me wanting to head to Fremont for lunch!

Judy

ps: like your rose pictures, too. The bi-color one is indeed a mystery plant!

Oh my goodness, that looks good!!! I am so drooling over those photos. I'll have to check out the restaurant scene near me and see if we have any that serve Afghani fare.
