I had the opportunity to witness the historic event of the Inauguration of the First African American President of the United States... So here is where the story starts -
Hello from SFO. Yes, that is where I am at this moment. After a very hectic couple of days, I am on my way to Washington D.C. – my trip to witness the historic presidential inauguration of President elect Barrack Obama – don’t you love just saying that name…

Getting here has been one hectic journey, so an hour and a half of idle time at the airport is such a welcome.
I had to prepare for a week’s worth of lesson plans… I was trying to be even more thorough because a dear friend of mine, Ellen, is subbing. Most likely, I have over planned and I hope the poor dear is not going to try to do everything I put in those plans… I wanted the “just in case there is a gap time for those 5 year olds” covered so Ellen won’t have to deal with behavior issues.
To add to the stress, I was committed to do a presentation at the 2009 Asilomar Reading Conference. It sounded like something that I wanted to do back when they asked in the summer… What was I thinking??????????? So that was where I was today… drove to Asilomar and did a presentation, came home, finished packing, and here I am at the airport – dropped off by that darling daughter of mine.
Waiting at the United Airlines area, people watching, and looking forward to being in the district with 4 million others. I must really be excited about this (although I was feeling more stressed than excited earlier). I was telling complete strangers – a bunch of teachers who came to listen to my presentation, my parish priest after mass this morning, and anyone else willing to listen!
My friend Norma is already at the hotel and I have spoken to her several times… yes we are excited! How’s that for a republican who voted for Obama. Before you have a coronary, yes, I have been a closet republican but seriously, I am a conservative first and a republican second. (I am out of the closet! – to everyone now). Although a few people know and they love me anyway, don’t you, Carmen, Rosario, and Mila and my family too? :)

Eden,
I can't believe you went to DC for the Inauguration and didn't tell me. I was sent an invitation from the Inaugural Committee, but didn't go because I figured I'd be there without any friends around. Oh well....I was glued to the TV until I had to leave for a class. T.G. for DVRs.

Eden, it doesn't surprise me at all that you "fit in" the workshop at Asilomar prior to your flight. Can't wait to read about the rest of your trip and to see you as well. Hey! I didn't know you were in the closet. I'm also a Republican.
