an amazing year for Boston sports teams

The four major sports teams in Boston are the Bruins, the Celtics, the Red Sox, and the Patriots (which is officially a "New England" team).

The Bruins, founded in 1924, are winners of five Stanley Cups: 1929, 1939, 1941, 1970, and 1972. My memories of the Bruins are of the Bobby Orr years when the Bruins won two Stanley Cups in 1970 & 1972.

The Celtics, founded in 1946, are winners of 16 Championship Titles: 1957, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1974, 1976, 1981, 1984, 1986. This is the only Boston team that I would describe as a Dynasty. I pretty much remember them winning just about every year. This was my mom's big team. She LOVED the Celtics.

My beloved Red Sox, founded in 1901 as the Boston Americans. They later became the Boston Pilgrims, and then in 1907, the Boston Red Sox. They began playing in Fenway Park in 1912. They won the World Series Championship in 1903, 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918 and then 86 years later in 2004 and again in 2007. My memories until recently have been of frustation, disappointment &heartbreak. I still loved them when they were losing and never gave up on them until the very last out year to year, but always hated hearing "wait til next year". It is hard to put into words the joy I have felt with the two recent wins. All I can say is that after 2004, when they lost, it was no longer that painful, heartbreaking loss felt year after year after year.

And finally, the Patriots, founded in 1960 as the Boston Patriots. After moving to Foxborough, Massachusetts in 1970, they became the New England Patriots. My memories of the Patriots are of a losing team year after year while growing up. They did finally go to the Super Bowl for the first time in 1985 when I was living in Hawaii and lost terribly. I still rooted for them even though they got killed. Since then as everyone knows, they have recently won three Super Bowl Championships in 2001, 2003, and 2004. This again, I would not yet call a Dynasty, just an awfully talented team. Of course this account of winning years has been written and is being posted before today's game. I may need to update this post after the game :-)

So, looking at the history of Boston teams, besides the Celtics, I would not call any of the Boston Teams either individual or together a Monopoly or a Dynasty. Even the Celtics are no longer a Dynasty.

All I have heard for years and years is about the 26 Yankees wins. We have been the underdogs for years. Why does everyone all of a sudden hate us? Let us enjoy winning a year or two or three or four. When we get to 26, then you can tell us to stop winning.

Boston fans for the most part have always been proud of their teams, win or lose. That has been what made most of us life long fans or "friends" of the Bruins, Celtics, Red Sox, and Patriots.

I have to say that this year has been an amazing year for Boston sports teams. The Bruins with a surprisingly good season, the Celtics record of 36-8 so far with the best record in the league, the Red Sox World Series Championship, and an incredible record for the New England Patriots of 18-0, something to be very proud of win or lose today.

GO PATS!!!!!

And of course the best thing about the Super Bowl is...
baseball is right around the corner!!!

Jill:

My boyfriend would like to mention that the Snow Bowl game in 2002 where the Patriots played the Raiders...that was a fumble. Raiders fans have looooooooong memories. ;-D

I was not happy with the first title...so I have updated this post with a new title.

Jill, I do remember that game. I take the fifth...& was not one of the referees ;-)
