It started off as a normal day; groaning when my alarm went off, hitting the snooze button as many times as I could get away with, eating my cereal while checking out a few blogs, and realizing that although I plugged in my espresso machine, I forgot to turn it on, which resulted in leaving my house a little later than planned. A normal morning, with no major traffic problems reported and no problems expected getting to work on time. Little did I know...
While starting my car, I noticed a momentary strange sound but paid no attention and headed on my way. My big decision of the morning was deciding which way to go. There is the direct route (Fort Weaver Road - which at times could be called the road from hell) and then there are the 5 alternate routes. The question always is which way will get me to the freeway the fastest. I decided on one of the alternate routes (going by Holomua School) and was so proud that I chose the correct route. It is almost like choosing the correct curtain on Let's Make a Deal. I figured I saved at least 10 minutes getting through the first light on Fort Weaver Road by taking my little alternate route. And then it happened…just as I started to merge back onto the main road, my car stalled!!
I panicked. It was as if I forgot how to drive for a moment. My first instinct was to turn the key to try to restart the car. But then I realized that I would probably damage my car if I turned the key while in drive. By then the car was slowing down and nothing was working. I had visions of people behind me flipping out as I tried to get over to the side of the road. I was able to get over just enough for people to go around me without getting myself on the morning news for being the cause of a major traffic jam. I tried to start the car again a couple of times but each time it stalled.
A very nice man on a bike came to my rescue (well actually asked if he could help but there wasn't much he could do). I told him that my car just stalled and asked him if he knew what that meant. He asked if I had gas in the car. Yes, I had gas (thank goodness, that sure would have been embarrassing - although in the end a much cheaper problem). He then thought that perhaps it was an electrical problem but admitted that he was just guessing. He really had no idea.
I called Saturn to see if I could bring it in. When the girl on the phone asked where I was and I mentioned Fort Weaver Road, she reacted as if I was coming from Alaska! I asked her if she knew what made a car stall. She had no idea either. Meanwhile I kept trying to start the car. It finally started.
My next decision was whether or not to attempt to drive my car in to Saturn or call a tow truck. My tow coverage (I think) is only for 10 miles and I believe Saturn is about 15 miles away. I also know that calling a tow truck involves at least a 45-minute wait. I decided to take a chance and drive my car in with plans to stay to the far right as much as possible. I called work and let them know that I was going to be a little late. Luckily I have extra help in my room on Wednesday mornings and I figured I wouldn’t be that late if the traffic wasn’t bad. I will save my shuttle ride experience :{
for another blog post.
During my drive, I wondered if somehow my car was getting back at me because I have recently been thinking about buying a new car. I even spent some time on the web the other night checking out the new Saturn cars and some Hybrid cars. As I drove carefully towards Saturn, I apologized to my car and told my car how much I loved it. I also told my car that I was really not thinking of getting rid of it for quite a long time. I also pleaded with it to not stall as my heart was racing the entire way. I also realized during my drive to Saturn that I did not have any lunch. When I left my house this morning, I decided to go to the health food store nearby during my lunch break to pick up lunch and some coffee (not thinking that I would not have a car).
My car made it all the way to Saturn without stalling again. When I got there (a little before 8), I told the service guy what happened. I also told him that I needed an oil change and explained that I was not sure what other service I needed. When I first bought my car, I bought the extended service warranty plan, which meant that for the first 5 years, anything that needed to be done was covered, including all regular maintenance. Although my service plan has expired, Saturn had all my records in the computer and I figured they would know what I needed to have done. I was quite shocked when he informed me that I never had my 30,000 mile scheduled maintenance service, which he also said was a big service (meaning lots of money). I asked him if he was sure and informed him that I should not have to pay for that because it was supposed to be included in my extended service warranty plan. He insisted that this service would not be covered and that I would have had to pay for it even if it was done when it was supposed to be done. He appeared to be a little puzzled also as to why it wasn’t done. I have always trusted Saturn and figured I needed it done so I told him to do it.
He then told me that IF they found what was wrong and had to do more work to fix the problem causing my car to stall, I would not have to pay the $128.92 diagnostic service charge (to figure out what was wrong). My estimated cost (with the diagnostic cost) was $686.73 and this was before fixing what was wrong with my car. That was a pretty expensive oil change since that was all I originally asked for besides getting my car fixed!
The service guy called me later in the day, telling me that the "stalling out" problem was discovered. It had something to do with carbon needing to be cleaned out of something that was all clogged up…which translated into another $600.00 charge!! Of course he reminded me that I would not be charged the $128.92 diagnostic service charge. That gave me little comfort. I again questioned why I was paying for the 30,000 mile maintenance since it should have been previously done and covered on my warranty service plan. The Saturn service guy again insisted that it would not have been covered.
Grand total: $1,127.11 and a migraine after spending a few minutes in a tiny area where the cashier had a very strong lei on the counter. Because of the lei, I did not even look at the bill. I just gave her my credit card and signed it as quick as I could to get out of there.
I was not happy with the bill but figured what could I do? I tried to rationalize that it really was only 4 car payments and since I didn’t have car payments anymore it really was not that bad as long as my car did not break down again in the near future.
During my ride home, I was still bothered by the fact that the service was not done when it was supposed to be done and the fact that I was being told that I would have had to pay for it anyways. When I got home, I emptied out my glove box looking for my old Saturn service statements. I have not been great about keeping all my car papers in one place but did find a few statements. In that pile, I found my 30,000 mile car maintenance WHICH was done and was covered (which means I did not have to pay for it to be done!!).
One of the reasons I have liked Saturn is that I have not felt taken advantage of as the "dumb girl" that knows nothing about cars. I have trusted Saturn whenever I have been told that something needed to be repaired. Today, I felt that I was taken advantage of. I am hoping that it was just an honest mistake. If you asked me today (after being told I needed to have a service done which was already done and after my latest shuttle experience which I will blog about later) if I would buy another Saturn, I would probably say "No".
I will be calling Saturn tomorrow. I am hoping that this can be resolved in some way. I am not sure what to expect. I will also make sure to let Saturn know that this experience has been documented on my blog and I will be writing their response in a future post. I do hope Saturn redeems itself. We shall see...
Oh...and my friend took me out to get lunch so I did not starve :)

Oh how awful! I don't know why, but it seems so embarrassing to stall in the midst of traffic (people react as if we do it on purpose or something). And then to have your Saturn dealer mistreat you - I am outraged on your behalf!! Glad to hear your friend redeemed the day with kindness! I can't wait to find out what your dealership does to compensate you for the duplicate maintenance charges.

So sorry to read about your car problem yesterday. We’re so dependent on our cars that when they breakdown, this becomes a major disruption in our lives. The service guy erred on two points and that should be enough to resolve this in your favor: get full credit for the 30,000 mile service.
If you do not get a favorable resolution from Saturn, you should make a call to the "Click and Clack" brothers' (program on NPR) . Your story should make for a great segment on their radio show.
I enjoyed reading the part were you apologized to the car. Funny!
p.s. Sorry about the link on yesterday's comment. I didn’t think it was going to cause any problems.

Sorry about your ordeal and best of luck getting it all straightened out. Memo to Saturn: Do the right thing!
I loved the part where you were talking to your car too!

What an ordeal -- it's so frustrating and unnerving when our cars break down. For me, at least, it's because they are a great mystery to me and I don't know what has happened or how to fix it. I feel so vulnerable.
How wonderful that you've saved all of your receipts so you have proof that you had the 30,000 mile service performed. What a pain in the derriere for you, though.
I'm able to walk to work and consider that a huge luxury. As a result, my beloved little Toyota Tercel, Lucy, has become something of a pet car. She spends 90 per cent of her time resting in an underground parkade.
Lucy is 17 years old, no rust, the engine runs really well and I've put very little money into her. Again, because she sits most days. But I really swear by Toyotas, I've found them to be remarkably sturdy.
I hope this is quickly resolved for you, and that your migraine has settled down.

I'm always telling my car how much I love it and how great it is. And so far, it's done it's part by being very reliable. But then, it's a Honda. :-D
I can't believe they screwed up on the 30,000 mile service. Aaaargh!!! They definitely need to credit you that charge. And give you a free 60,000 (or 90...whatever comes next) mile service. And bend over backwards when they apologize. I want read about groveling in your next post.

Oh man, this stinks. Remember, I went through something similar 2 years ago. I hope Saturn comes through for you - doing a second 30K check-up, not having a record of the first, and charging you too boot is totally B-S. Do let us know how this turns out. Oh, and if it's any consolation, your blog will soon be found by people searching about Saturn on Google. I know I smile everytime someone finds me through Sebring Oil Pump or Sebring Transmission :).

Thanks everyone. I have more to share but just haven't had time. Nationally, so far Saturn has been understanding. Locally, no one has yet to return my call!
Anne, yes the stalling part was just as upsetting as the being charged twice part.
Maria and Annie, I also talk to my computer since it probably knows that I am thinking up upgrading.
Sandra, how lucky that you can walk to work. I have owned two Toyotas, both wonderful cars. I switched to Saturn for their service. We shall see just what service they will provide now.
Jill, I didn't even think about future free service. I better get some groveling!
Kim, I tried to write the word Saturn as many times as possible just for that reason in case I am not refunded, and if that happens, I will write the word Saturn even more and let them know. You will have to tell us about Sebring Oil Pump and Sebring Transmission sometime.

BTW, Girasoli, I've been forgetting to pass on a baseball-related message and I don't know where else to post it. And I was supposed to pass this on to you a couple of days ago, from by Cubbie-loving colleague Paul.
Anyway, I was asked to point out to you that the Cubs had been on a streak, winning 9 of 10 games (until Wednesday?) Now, of course, they're at something like 15-7 and which doesn't look that good to me but then I know nothing about baseball.
The message was supposed to be delivered, I believe, with some sort of sneer directed towards your Red Sox. But I say, if Paul wants to get into a sneering match, he really should start posting himself!
But I guess I don't mind being a blog mule, I might learn something. Certainly, I'm learning that I wouldn't want to bet on the Cubs.

Sandra, I am not even sure how to respond to Paul the Cubbie guy. First Red Sox fans are generally fans of the Cubs. There is no rival there like the Red Sox/Yankees. I have always cheered on the Cubs and the team I would want to see win the World Series the most (besides the Red Sox) would be the Cubs. So, I guess you can tell Paul, how wonderful that the cubs have won a bunch of games. Also, tell him he is free to post any comments on his own (I won't delete them). Sorry it took so long to reply. It has been a crazy week and as I said, I didn't even know how to respond at first. Thanks for being the blog mule :)

Amazing that a company like Saturn can't get it together for you...
hoping it all goes well, and you are more than happy with the end result!
Hopefully...
