surfs up

I would recommend watching the videos full screen video mode to get the full effect. To view full screen, click on the little box on the far right after clicking on the arrow to play (click escape to exit full screen video mode).

Important tip: Never, never, never stand where the foolish people at the edge of the water are standing if you ever get a chance to see these big waves in person. It IS very dangerous! You can get swept away in a blink of an eye.

Surf's up! Had to email this to my fiance, who's missing these waves......M

Kathy (Trekcapri):

Awesome!

WOW! I'd love to see them in person one day but from waaaaay far.

sandrac:

Very cool -- especially in the full screen mode!

And that's a helpful safety tip, stay awaaaaaay from the big waves!

menehune, I always find it interesting how big surf tops all other news stories here in Hawaii when the surf it big. I can watch these waves for hours. They are so mesmerizing and the big once are incredible to watch. Unfortunately I am usually working when the big surf hits and stay away on the weekends when the traffic is crazy. Does your fiance surf? And does he surf in big waves 30-40 feet (15-20 feet Hawaiian scale waves)?

Kathy, they definitely are amazing!!

Maria, they are so cool to see in person. You really don't have to be that far away, just not right at the edge like those crazy tourists. Anyone who lives here knows that it only takes one wave to wipe you right out to sea.

Sandra, glad you enjoyed the videos. Believe it or not, those waves are not even big enough for the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Surf Competition.

Wanna hear my stupid tourist story?
My son and I stopped at this area, which is one of my favorite spots in Hawaii, to watch some pretty spectacular waves. I was standing on the sand looking out at the waves crashing in on the shore, when a small wave washed in behind me ... when it rolled back out, it took all of the sand under my feet with it! I went from standing in ankle-deep sand to being buried up to my knees...all in a few seconds. I wish the photos my kid took of that experience were digital! I'd post them here for you to see the look of shock on my face!!!
I absolutely love parking along the highway, taking my camera and leaving my flipflops behind, and walking for hours on that beach. It is so spectacular when the water's high!
AND, in the summer, it's almost flat water.
My son bought an Eddie Would Go T-shirt...still has it, I think.
Mahalo for posting, a reminder for me why I love the area so much!
Aloha,
Brenda

Brenda, I have seen that many times. So glad you are ok!! One time my friend and I watched this very out of shape man at Makapuu beach attempt to body board on a very dangerous surf day. There were signs posted everywhere. The lifeguard kept yelling at him to get out of the water, each time even more specifically describing what he was wearing. He ignored them. Five minutes later the lifeguards were in the water rescuing him. Never never test mother nature when it comes to big surf. There have been far too many unnecessary deaths.

menehune:

G; I almost drowned at Makapuu ... and I was in my 20's in fine shape. Fortunately, my friend dragged me in to shore after he saw me go under for the third time. Lifeguards raised the flags after that. Learned the power of mother sea that day. My fiance grew up surfing along that part of Oahu ... says he's too old to do that now - he'd break something:=) I was amazed my first time to the North Shore to realize that the surfers were that far out in the waves -- on TV they appear so much closer to shore.

Ty and I watched the news clip about the tourists' disregard for the flags - hats off to the lifeguards!

I'm glad your friend dragged you to shore! Makapuu is my favorite beach. Funny, I was always amazed seeing surfers surfing so close to shore! I guess my first experience was watching surfers here in Hawaii so I thought that was how surfing was done everywhere. I dated a surfer for a while. He even made me a board. I tried it a couple of times but my arms are too weak for surfing. I am also a chicken.
