the beautiful Santa Maria della Salute

Now don't faint anyone... finally, I am getting back to my Italy trip report from last summer. I figured I better get to it before baseball season begins and I get distracted again. I'm also avoiding doing my taxes right now...

Friday, June 10th:
My plans for Friday were to wander and take photos until later in the day when Sandra and I would meet up to head to Padova for our Scrovegni Chapel reservation. I will break this day up into a few posts.

The last time I was in Venice, the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute was covered in ugly scaffolding so it was on my list of places to visit on this trip. I love this church. It has so many dimensions to it. I am definitely more of a fan of sculpture and architect than paintings and this church has so many dimensions to it. I could stare at it all day and discover something new.

I didn't expect the church to be nearly empty when I went inside. It was nice and peaceful and so beautiful.

I had one more stop to make before heading back onto the vaporetto. I had to go and check out the Boy with Frog.

I was surprised to find that this Boy with Frog comes with an armed guard. I guess this boy and/or frog is much more valuable than one would think.

At first I was a little nervous about getting too close to the boy until I saw other tourists walking right up to the boy. That put me a little more at ease.

I was unaware that a glass case covers the boy at night until I read venezia blog's interesting post on the subject. Of course then I had to do a bit more googling and found this amazing photo of the Boy with Frog in the glass case.

Great angle on the photos. Your photos also capture the brilliant light that shows up after a rain. Beautiful

Salute is one of my favorites, too! I have some photos (somewhere) of the details around the huge doors. The Boy with Frog sculpture is beautiful. I like the way you famed it against other views. The photo at the link you provided is incredible!

Marta, thanks so much for your comments on my photos. They mean a lot to me.

Colleen. oooh! I would love to see those photos! The Boy with Frog was pretty cool. It was fun to take photos from different angles. The challenge was trying to keep other people out of the photos. Yes, isn't that night photo amazing! I am sure a tripod was used for that one.

Yeah - I am glad that you're avoiding your taxes and writing about your trip. i've been waiting . . . and waiting. LOL

Hi Girasoli, when I was in Venice, the Salute church also had scaffolding so it would be nice to visit it without it. My apartment was only a 5 minute walk away and I had several visits here and loved it. The floor is very beautiful too. You captured it beautifully. I loved the acoustics inside and enjoyed attending mass there with the singing and everything. A very fond memory for me.

I had not heard of the boy with the Frog before. It's an interesting looking piece and big too. It's situated in such a great location.

Thanks so much for sharing. Have a wonderful evening.

Jerry, I may get my entire trip report finished this way! I have already completed 3 more posts that I have scheduled and have not touched my taxes!

Kathy, I love the floor also! Thanks for you comments! I would love to have attended a mass at this church. I can just imagine the acoustics when everyone sings.

Anne:

Your photos are beautiful (as always.) I love this church building too, it is very graceful...have yet to get inside though. The sculpture is luminous. A curious subject, makes me think of Mark Twain!

Thanks Anne. You must go inside next time you are there. I think you will really enjoy this church. I think I first heard of the Boy with Frog by seeing a photo somewhere. Ever since then, it was on must list of things to do in Venice.

It's so great to see your photos from Venice last summer -- they're so beautiful. Salute is such a lovely church, and I love your angles on the Boy with the Frog -- brilliant!
