I have decided to go with the...

Sunday morning, after climbing the Giotto's Bell Tower (in Florence, Italy), I heard band music playing nearby. The band turned out to be the Rossa Italiana Corpa Militare Band. They were closing out the Calcio Storico event that took place a few days earlier in the week. After watching the band play for a few minutes, it started to march. Everyone followed the band. It was really alot of fun. The band marched around the block from the Piazza della Repubblica towards the Duomo and then back to the Piazza della Repubblica.

Somehow, I ended right up in the front and was able to video the band marching. Here's a little video clip I took. Towards the end of the clip, check out the cute kid and his mother's expression as she realizes that I am taking video of him marching along with the band.

When the band returned to the Piazza della Repubblica, it started to play again.

If you are really into band music, here are...

After a few songs, I headed back to my B&B. A little while later, I was surprised to hear the band playing again! Now they were playing in Piazza della Signoria. I went to watch them play and this time I was able to maneuver my way up to the front of the crowd.

The last song they played Fratelli d'Italia (the Italian National Anthem) . I recorded all of it except for the first few seconds on video. It was a chicken skin moment as many in the crowd sang along!

After the band finished playing, the person leading the band went over to salute a few military officers and the new mayor (in the blue suit on the left).

Then the band marched off and packed up their instruments.

Wednesday, July 15th:
The skies were gray Wednesday morning. Not long after I woke up, it began to rain. I had two full days left in Stresa and both Santa Caterina del Sasso & Orta were on my list as places I definitely wanted to visit. Santa Caterina del Sasso, a monastery that was built in the 12th century on a rocky hillside, looked like the better choice for a cloudy/rainy day. After breakfast, the rain stopped for a bit. I took the 9:55 am boat (5.80 euros roundtrip) to Santa Caterina. For the history of this amazing monastery, check out <a href="http://stresasights.blogspot.com/2009/01/blog-post.html"target="_blank">Dana's blog post.

Because I took so many photos that I want to share, I am going to save the rest of Santa Caterina by doing two more blog posts later this week.

When the 10:50 boat arrived, I was not ready to leave. It was nice to be alone for a few minutes before the new boatload of people arrived. Even with other people there, this place was so peaceful.

The next boat (11:30) was the last to leave before the 2 hour lunch break. I could have stayed for hours but did not think to pack a lunch. As you can see, the weather was still pretty dreary on the return trip back.

I met two very nice people from England on the boat on the way back. When we returned to Stresa, I joined them for coffee and an enjoyable chat in the main piazza. Drinking coffee so late in the morning on an empty stomach was not a good idea though. That along with all the wheat from the pizza and pasta I have been eating resulted in a stomach ache and a migraine. I went back to my hotel room, had some yogurt and fruit, and then slept while it rained during the afternoon.

When I woke up, the skies were sunny. I watched some of the Tour de France in Italian and then went down to the courtyard area of my hotel to use the free wifi. A little while later, a woman sat down right next to me and lit up a cigarette. I could not believe it! There must be 25-30 chairs outside the hotel and I was the only other person sitting outside. I glared at her as I got up and moved. I really don't think she got it.

Before dinner, I walked to the train station to buy my ticket for Friday. Instead of walking back to my hotel, I decided try a different way into town. This is when I came upon the <a href="http://www.slowtrav.com/blog/girasoli/2009/10/words_photohunt.html"target="_blank">ti amo words written in chalk. I also discovered a tiny church and ended up in back of the famous Hotel Iles Borromees. I hung out down by the waterfront, taking photos until dinner.

I returned to Ristorante il Vicoletto for another delicious dinner, ordering the bufala mozzarella, tomatoes & sardines and the ravioli with fish and fresh tomatoes. Yum! The waiter from il Pappagallo (the one who waited on me, not the one who called me Catarina) was also eating there Wednesday evening. That is a sure sign of a good restaurant.

No, this is not related to the <a href="http://www.collect-antiques.net/Toys/Games/mystery-date.php"target="_blank">Mystery Date game (for those old enough to remember).

I chose the title mystery door because I wanted to see if anyone can guess where this door in Florence is located. This is the same door (different shot) as the second photo in my last post - <a href="http://www.slowtrav.com/blog/girasoli/2009/10/post_30.html"target="_blank">"tied"~ PhotoHunt.

I cropped the second photo from my last post so you can see the detail a little better.

And if anyone knows more about the history of this door, I am curious about the story of the one panel on the door that is carved like a flower. I tried googling this door but came up empty.

Woo Hoo!!! <a href="http://www.slowtrav.com/blog/sandrac/"target="_blank">Sandra guessed the mystery door location!! :)

This was going to be my next clue...

These flags fly over this door.

The mystery door is...

the *other door* of the Palazzo Vecchio.

Can you spot the door in this photo of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palazzo_Vecchio"target="_blank">Palazzo Vecchio?

Tuesday, July 14th:
The weather was overcast when I woke up Tuesday morning. I hung out at my hotel for a while and had a late breakfast. When it started to clear a bit midmorning, I decided to go to the top of Mt. Mottorone.

The walk along the waterfront was very enjoyable. I checked out the 5 star hotels along the way and took lots of photos as I headed to the spot where the cable car to Mt. Mottorone was located. At one point, I became a little lost trying to reach the cable car station, something that really shouldn't have happened, but I easily get lost coming out of a store in the mall. The combo of taking photos and getting lost as well as the late start put me at the cable car ticket office right before the last ride up before their lunch break.

I bought my ticket (17.50 euros to the top) and got on the cable car along with what seemed like a class full of German and French preschoolers! It was an interesting ride up. At the midway stop (800 m altitude) everyone gets off. A second cable car continues on to the top (1491 m altitude). I had two choices, hanging out at the midway stop and checking out the alpine garden or continuing on up to the top. Because this was the last car going up until lunch was over for the cable car workers, I needed to make a decision and fast. Visibility was still good at the midway point. I decided to continue to the top. So did the gang of preschoolers.

As we continued towards the top, it started to get a bit fogged in but I tried to stay positive. There still was one tiny spot that was clear.

When we reached the top, I walked outside and was met with this view...

There really was not much to do up at the top...

I had 10 minutes to decide whether to stay at the top or head back down to the midway point, taking the last cable car back down before the lunch break began. My original plan was to hang out and eat lunch at the top (I packed a yogurt and some fruit) but since it was completely fogged in at the top and I saw pretty much all I was going to see, I jumped back in the cable car and rode back down to the midway point. This time I was alone (except for the cute cable car guy).

I knew from reading about Mt. Mottorone, that there was an alpine wildflower garden called the Botanic Garden Alpinia at the midway point. The walk to the Botanic Garden Alpinia was longer than I thought it would be. I enjoyed the walk as it was nice and cool, but I was a little concerned that once again I might be lost as the directions were not very clear. Along the way, I checked out the trees with these cool hanging flowers.

After about 20 or so minutes of walking on the main road, I finally found the Botanic Garden Alpinia. There was an older man sitting near the entrance. I didn't even think about it costing anything. I am really not sure if my ticket was supposed to include the entrance fee or not, but after a short conversation, the man let me in. I have to say that if you decide to go see this garden, you really should see it before <a href="http://www.slowtrav.com/blog/girasoli/2009/10/villa_t.html"target="_blank">visiting the Villa Taranto. I did enjoy checking out the various wildflowers in the Botanic Garden Alpinia but I think they would have made more of an impact if I had not just seen the amazing variety of flowers at Villa Taranto.

Photos of a few of the flowers at the Botanic Garden Alpinia:

Liatris spicata (Gay Feather) and Linaria angustissima

Helenium flexuosum (purplehead sneezeweed)

Echinacea purpurea (eastern purple coneflower)

At the end of the main path in the Botanic Garden Alpinia, I came upon this little vista point. I decided that this would make a perfect lunch spot.

I took out my favorite coconut yogurt and my fruit and sat down. TIP... always be careful when opening a container of yogurt with a tinfoil type lid. As I pulled the lid, it exploded everywhere! All over my sunglasses, arm, shirt, shorts, everywhere! I had half a bottle of water and one small napkin but somehow managed to clean myself up.

As I walked back to the cable car, it began to sprinkle. It was nice and cool and refreshing, knowing that down below it was hot and humid.

Here are some views of the ride back down:

I took more photos (which I will share in another post) as I walked back to the center of Stresa. For dinner Tuesday evening, I ate at il Pappagallo. The waiter for some reason kept calling me Catarina as he brought me to my table. I told him my real name when I was seated. Even though the waiter that seated me was not my waiter for the evening, he still called out my name a few times across the room asking me if everything was ok. I was pretty hungry and ordered both a pizza bufalina (pizza with bufala mozzarella) and then some pesto pasta. I don't know what I was thinking because of course I could not finish the pasta. I am sure the waiter thought I was crazy ordering this combination but it sounded good to me. I thought il Pappagallo served good food and was a fun place to eat. There seemed to be a mix of locals and tourists at this restaurant. On my way back to my hotel, I stopped at Ristorante il Vicoletto and made a reservation for the following evening since il Pappagallo is closed on Wednesdays and Ristorante il Vicoletto is closed on Thursdays.

I have mixed feelings about taking the cable car up to Mt. Mottorone. I thought the price was very expensive. I realize that I did not get to experience the amazing views that I have read about, but 17.50 euros is a lot for a view. I also thought that the alpine garden was nice but it was pretty small. For someone really into wildflowers, it might be worth it though. I am more of a boat person and if I had it to do over again, I probably would have taken a boat ride to explore another town on the lake or maybe even taken the boat to Locarno or Ascona in Switzerland (2 places I visited in 2003) instead of taking the cable car up to Mt. Mottorone. Even so, I did have a nice day.

Being a HUGE Red Sox fan, of course the first thing that came to my mind was Red Sox photos. I have not been to a game since July 2003. The first photo was taken outside one of the entrance gates into Fenway Park. The next two are of the same game before and after the sun went down. I took these photos with my first ever digital camera so they are not the best of photos but they bring back great memories.

Below is a YouTube clip of Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" which is being sung at Fenway Park before the bottom of the 8th inning, a tradition at every home game.

I did not take this video but wanted to include it hoping that it will help bring the Sox some luck. The Sox are down two games to the Angels right now. We have been here before. I am not giving up.

I still believe and will love my Red Sox forever win or lose.

When I got home, I was very surprised to find out after googling Nelumbo Nucifera that is is the Lotus flower. How did I not know what a lotus flower looked like?

So here you go... my photos of the magnificent lotus flower:
Brugmansia Suaveolens - I had to google this one. I found out that this flower is known commonly as either the Angel’s Trumpet flower or the Angel's Tears flower. It is also known as the Datura. While researching this flower, I found out that this flower is poisonous, has been used as an antiasthmatic and antispasmodic medication, and has been used as a hallucinogen. I just thought it was pretty.
Hibiscus Syriacus - var. Blue Bird - You may be wondering why I would include a hibiscus flower since the hibiscus flower is very common in Hawaii. This was the first time I have seen a blue (although to me it seemed more like lilac) hibiscus flower. With purple being my favorite color, I was pretty excited to see this color hibiscus flower. The photo is not that great though. The wind and the sun were not cooperating much for me when I came upon this flower.

I do have one more flower to share. It was my very favorite flower. I am saving it for my next post to keep the number of photos at a reasonable number.

Monday, July 13th:

I can't believe it is October and I have yet to finish up blogging about my summer trip to Italy. The way things are going, I hope to finish by Thanksgiving or perhaps even Christmas!

Continuing with my stay in Stresa:

I awoke early Monday morning enjoying this beautiful view out my window. What a wonderful way to start the day.

My plan was to visit Villa Taranto. After puttering around my hotel for a while and enjoying another wonderful breakfast, I walked down to the imbarcadero and bought a boat ticket to Villa Taranto (€ 10.80).

Being a fan of boats, I loved that it took about 45 minutes to get there. The boat pretty much emptied out after making stops at Isola Bella, Isola Pescatori, and Baveno. I think there was only one or two other couples and myself left on the boat at this point.

After leaving Baveno, we headed past Isola Madre, the only one of the three islands that I did not visit during my stay in Stresa. This was one of my favorite photos of Isola Madre.

Next, we headed towards Verbania. As I understand it, Pallanza and Intra both neighborhoods of the the city of Verbania. Villa Taranto is located between these two places. The boat stops in all three places.

I would have loved to have stopped in Pallanza but did not have enough time. Here are a few photos I took as we rode by.

The next stop was the amazing <a href="http://www.villataranto.it/eng/default.asp"target="_blank">Villa Taranto. I had no idea just how much I would love my visit to these beautiful gardens.

After purchasing my ticket (€ 9.00) and taking a look at the map of the gardens (which I studied a bit on the way there) I started out on the main path. I was very fortunate to meet a lovely older couple from England who travel the world to see rare flowers as I entered the dahlia maze. They shared tons of info with me and pointed out important flowers I might have ignored. I walked with them for about 15 or 20 minutes. I did run into them again a bit later when looking at the most amazing flower that captured my attention. Even they did not know anything about this flower. I also met two girls from Russia and a nice French family during my tour of the gardens.

I took tons of photos during my walk through the gardens. I decided a slide show would work best to give you an idea of the beauty and diversity of the gardens of Villa Taranto.

<a href="http://www.slowtrav.com/blog/marta/"target="_blank">Marta, I thought of you so many times knowing just how much you would have LOVED seeing all of the incredible flowers at Villa Taranto.

I spent two and a half hours exploring and I would have stayed even longer but my allergies were starting to bother me (being surrounded by so many flowers everywhere). After leaving the Villa, I headed back down to the boat dock. When I arrived, I realized that the next boat was not scheduled to arrive for at least 30 minutes. Instead of sitting around waiting, I walked down to the little boat harbor nearby to take some photos of the boats.

As I walked by the boats in the boat harbor, I decided to keep on going and walked about 30 minutes to the town of Intra. Along the way, I met a nice man who started to speak rapidly in Italian once I spoke a few words of Italian to him. I understood about half of what he was saying. He walked with me as far as the imbacadero, which was nice since I had no idea where I was going.

The imbacadero in Intra was huge! I wanted to find out the boat schedule before exploring the town. Because this imbacadero was so huge, I was a little nervous about figuring out which boat I would need to take to get back to Stresa. The nice man pointed out where I needed to go to purchase a ticket before saying goodbye.

The very kind woman at the ticket counter gave me a schedule and then told me to come back to see her when I was ready to board and she would show me which boat I needed to take to head back to Stresa. I bought a ticket from Intra to Villa Taranto (since I had a round trip ticket to/from Villa Taranto from Stresa) for € 1.90 and thanked the woman.

I loved the town of Intra. There were cool winding streets, fun little shops, an interesting church (which I think was the main church of the town) with a tall tower.

I was really hungry (didn't eat lunch yet) and it was a little late to find places still openn for lunch. My first stop was the Ciao Bella Gelateria. Two thumbs up! Great gelato!!

Then I looked for a little shop that sold food. I wanted to buy some yogurt but the shop didn't have any. The owner of the shop was so nice. He told me that he might be able to find some in the back for me. He ended up bringing out a flavor that I don't really like very much. We started chatting. I told him how much I enjoyed walking around Intra and asked him why it was not more crowded. He said it was not a big tourist town since there are not many hotels in Intra. He told me that most people stay in Pallanza (which seemed to me to be much larger than Intra).

After I left the shop, I stopped in the church and then walked back down towards the boat. I saw some people sitting outside at a little bar along the way. I asked if it was possible to orders some lunch. I hit the jackpot! I ordered a fabulous caprese salad, sat outside, and enjoyed the views of the lake and the boats.

As I headed back to the imbacadero, I took this photo. This is not a photo of the imbacadero. I didn't think to take a photo of all the docks and boats when I was there.

I went back to the ticket counter. The woman smiled when she saw me and pointed out the boat to Stresa. Here is a view of Intra from the boat:

I had a very enjoyable ride back to Stresa. I sat next to a woman from Bergamo who was traveling with a small group. The woman was amazed that I had been to Bergamo and even more amazed that I was in Lucca earlier in the summer. She was going there with some friends in a few weeks. I told her all the places she should see and gave her some restaurant recommendations. She kept laughing thinking that this girl from Hawaii was giving her Italian tourist recommendations.

When we stopped at Isola Madre, we could not believe how many people were waiting to board the boat. I wasn't sure if there would even be enough room on the boat for everyone. I made a note to myself that visiting Isola Madre in the morning is the way to go. There were hardly any people stopping there on the way to Villa Taranto.

My toes were pretty tired after all the walking I did on Monday and I still had to walk up the hill to my hotel and then up 37 steps to the hotel, two steps in and out of the hotel to get my key and then 40 more steps to up to my room in the building next door. It was almost like climbing a mini tower.

That evening I ate at Ristorante il Vicoletto. Because I ate such a late lunch, I was only planning to order a pasta dish. I ordered ravioli with fish and fresh tomatoes. It was fabulous. The bread was also soooo good! Because the food was so good, I could not resist trying a dessert. Most desserts had chocolate, which I can't eat, so I ordered an apple cake. It was good but nothing to rave about. Il Vicoletto is a small restaurant. There were two women working (I think one might have been the owner). Great service. The cost of my meal was € 19. It was a little more expensive, but it was a nice quiet restaurant with great food and service.

When I gave the woman (that I think was the owner) my credit card, she commented about the seal on the card and then realized that I was from Hawaii. She told me that she was thinking of visiting Hawaii and asked me all kinds of questions about flights, time of year to visit, etc. etc. We spoke half in Italian and half in English. She was so nice. She kept apologizing for asking me questions but really, I enjoyed chatting with her.

Next up, photos of some of my favorite flowers at Villa Taranto.

*Edited Wednesday morning: After starting to work on my next post, I realized that I had too many photos, so I added a few of them into the slide show above instead.

...or are we going to get serious about demanding a public health option?

A public health option will provide us with a choice and it will provide medical coverage for those with pre-existing conditions. It will bring costs down. With the competition it will provide, it will encourage private plans to do better. No one will be forced into the public health option. It will just be that.. an option.

Every American has a fundamental right to have decent, quality health care. <a href="http://www.americacantwait.com/TrueMajority"target="_blank">Sign this petition. Call your congressmen. Demand a public health option before it is too late.
