When Dogs Attack

Got this in an e-mail today.

Dog Pack Attacks Gator In Florida

At times nature can be cruel, but there is also a raw beauty, and even a certain justice manifested within that cruelty.

The alligator, one of the oldest and ultimate predators, normally considered the "apex predator," can still fall victim to implemented 'team work' strategy, made possible due to the tight knit social structure and "survival of the pack mentality"bred into the canines.

See the remarkable photograph below courtesy of Nature Magazine. Note that the Alpha dog has a muzzle hold on the gator preventing it from breathing, while another dog has a hold on the tail to keep it from thrashing. The third dog attacks the soft underbelly of the gator.

Other Thinks (13)

OMG I completely fell for it! I almost didn't click on "read more" because I was expecting the photo to be gruesome. Good one!

Oh, the humanity.....

Speaking of muzzles, my grandma used to have a gift for mangling the English language. When Sam, our family dog, would bark or howl (usually at the sound of sirens) Grandma would complain that we should "put a nozzle on that dog" to shut him up. Presumably, she did mean we should muzzle him.

But poor Sam -- I've never been able to shake the image of a blue heeler with his snout shoved into the nozzle from the garden hose.

Sandra, that is too funny of an image!

Annie - I felt the same way when I received the e-mail!

I'm a sucker also and fell hook, line, & sinker! CUTE photo!!

Hi Kim,

And here I was visualizing some dogs going at it on a gator. Good one! :)

This post, its subject matter, and the image, are quite a timely analogy. I'm struck by the irony.

What and miss being accused of censorship or compared to the KGB?

Deborah, you know, I didn't even realize the irony until you pointed it out. Very true.

Stephanie (dogma):

Hi Kim...here is where a gator ate a cairn!

Kim [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Stephanie before I look, is that real? Because that would really upset me - see what a chicken I am?

Stephanie (dogma):

Unfortunatley Kim, it is true.

How funny!

(written by my daughter as guest commenter):

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!! Its soooo cute I love it!!

Anne's daughter, glad you liked it. :)

Stephanie - there is no way I'm looking - no way.
