Or, hooray for wifi in Orvieto

So we have arrived at the Locanda Rosati, an inn in the hills outside Orvieto - and there is wifi, so I am going to try and post some of my saved journal entries, maybe even with pictures,

Sunday in Positano

This was our “vacation” day, no real plans to speak of, a whole day in paradise for nothing. We began with breakfast on the patio of the hotel, overlooking the Mediterranean, very cool. Then we packed up the laptop and went down the steps to the waterfront and found the internet café. I was able to log on there, and think I managed to upload notes and photos to the blog. Only one page went missing into cyberspace – que sera.

We took a walk to the right of the beach and up over a slight incline to a Fodor’s recommended ristorante for lunch: Lo Guarrancio overlooks a private beach and has a view of the Li Galli islands. We had a pitcher of the local white wine, and shared a plate of foccacia with rucola, grana and cherry tomatoes scattered on top. David had a plate of pasta arrabiata and I had mixed fried fish. The place was hardly full and we just sat and watched the ocean for awhile. On the stroll back we took a different path up and so were able to look at the windows of more shops on the way back to the hotel – I have to confess there are some pieces of pottery crying out, and I have two more days for some retail therapy (yes, I know I said no shopping, insert classic shrug). After a gelato, I took a nap and David decided to do some walking. I think he went south, towards Praino and has some pictures of chickens and roosters to show for it.

Our evening plan involved dinner and soccer, Italy vs. Spain, and we went back to Chez Black on the beach for what turned out to be several hours of eating and tv. Our new best friend Mario gave us a very nice table by a large screen. To start David had some arancini and I decided to try the vegetable antipasto buffet; then it was linguine al pesto for him and a seafood risotto for me. David also had a plate of veal Milanese. We were there into overtime, so had to have dessert: tiramisu for David and a slice of the torta caprese for me. The torta was something out of Dolce Italiano, and I wish I had the recipe: a dark chocolate/nut torte flavored with amaretto. The game went on long enough for a bottle of the local red, a glass of white for me and two beers for David. We had a nice conversation with honeymooners from Miami. And then to penalty kicks, and the Italians lost to Spain. We all decided to go home after that – the mood was definitely deflated at Chez Black.

Tomorrow is our day trip by boat to Capri.
