Outside Orvieto
Travel day – we have a last breakfast on the patio of the Hotel California, with our new friends from Melbourne – they got home from La Tagliata way after us last night. It’s a very humid day in Positano, so not too sadly we say farewell to the lovely Maria and head off to Naples to collect the car for our drive north. This time there are no highway mishaps.
Lunch at an Auto Grill just north of Rome; we’re still sad that we simply ignored this culinary highway genius until our trip last summer. Just imagine eating like this on a US highway – David has a pasta dish, I have a large salad with asparagus and pecorino, we have a glass of wine, all this for E 17, and we’re off to Orvieto.
The Locanda Rosati is a lovely country inn about 9 km outside of the ancient city of Orvieto – we actually find it even tho our GPS was not too sure of the location. There are maybe 12 rooms in an old stone farmhouse, with beautiful gardens and a pool – there is a wine cellar carved out of the old tufa. Each room is named for a animal; we are in the dog room. There is wifi, I get to read e-mail and add a few blog pages.
Entrance to the locanda:

The Locanda offers a dinner option and we decide, after a long travel day, that we will have dinner here. We are 20 for dinner, around two large tables, half of us are from California, including a couple from Danville and another from Santa Cruz. Dinner is amazing; it is served family style. The first course is squares of pizza, one a cheese &.tomato, the other grilled onion and sage. Next up is a zucchini risotto, the best risotto I think I have ever had. For a main course, we are served roasted chicken, potatoes and a zucchini dish. Have I mentioned the free flowing bottles of both local red and white wines? For dessert, there is an apricot tart, followed by coffee, and a choice of liquers, including limoncello and two kinds of grappa. I think it is likely we will eat here for our remaining dinners too – the food is excellent and the company charming.

Tomorrow we are going to spend the day in Orvieto, do the Underground tour, have lunch at I Sette Consoli and visit the Duomo. There might be time for some shopping, tho I do remember promising not to do any of that this trip. Well, since I have already gone down that rabbit hole . . . .

Marcia - you just may have convinced me to move Umbria higher up on my list of places to travel to! It sounds as if you are having a wonderful time.
