Quick and easy

In keeping with my motto of easy cooking (no doubt this is what makes me the excellent cook the blog quiz thinks I am), I found a new recipe to make for the kids the other night. I'm cooking in my daughter's kitchen this week, and since we would all rather be holding baby Sebastian, I decided that quick and easy is the way to go.

And this one turned out delicious, so I'm going to share:

Skillet Saurbraten (the original was for 2, so I tripled it for 6)

2 lbs round steak, sliced thin
1 large onion, chopped
6 Tblsp gingersnap cookies, crushed
3/4 tsp allspice
2 and 1/2 cups beef broth
4 Tblsp. red wine vinegar

Olive oil to cover skillet
Flour for meat

Heat oil in skillet, dredge meat in flour, season with salt and pepper. Sear meat one minute per side, then transfer to plate. Add onion to skillet, reduce heat to medium and saute until brown.
Add cookies and allspice to onion, stir one minute. Add broth and whisk sauce until thick. Season with vinegar, salt and pepper. Return steaks to skillet and simmer one minute.

I served this with buttered noodles and a red cabbage/broccoli slaw.

For dessert we had hamentaschen; Amy inspired me to bake these the week before Purim. I think hers looked much better, but everyone here thought that they tasted pretty good.

Those little hats are so cute with all the different colors of jam!

sheri:

That Saurbraten sounds delicious. I have a busy weekend, so that should be perfect for dinner on Sunday. Thanks!

Barb Cabot:

Quick and Easy is what I like. Thank you, the Sauerbraten sounds wonderful and the little Purim desserts are so cute.

The Saurbraten sounds like my type of recipe. Thanks for sharing. Love the little hats; so colorful.

Everything looks so good! I hope you are having a great time with the baby.

It all looks delicious! Am I too late for dinner?

sandrac:

As Barb says, quick and easy is always good. And these dishes look great!

Amy:

Yum! My MIL makes traditional saurbrauten that gets so over-marinted the meat falls to mush. Larry calls it rotten-brauten. Yours looks great.

sheri:

Marcia, I made this for dinner tonight. Everyone loved it. Thanks for sharing the recipe.
