Foligno: Giostra della Quintana

Foligno is an Umbrian town, 25 miles south-east of Perugia and the Giostra della Quintana is a medieval jousting tournament with the participation of Foligno’s ten neighborhoods. The competition is preceded by a historical parade, with town folks wearing period costumes, through the town main streets and ending in the campo where the actual competition will take place. The tournament is held in June and September. I didn't see the tournament but according to various sources it is a contest of skill and dexterity and the challenge is for the knights to stick their lances through a small ring hanging from a puppet. These pictures were taken on the day of the historical parade.

I really enjoyed this slide show. I always wondered what the rest of Foligno looked like. I stopped in Foligno once, only long enough to take a quick peek. I walked as far as the little arch in the middle of the road and then had to head back to catch my connecting train.

I went to Foligno to visit a friend and to see the historical parade. The town is not on the tourist radar because it seems to lack charm but it is not a dull town. A good time to visit is during one of the two giostre.
