AN OLD FRIEND AND FAITHFUL COMPANION

We planted this cherry tree even before we moved into our house. It is slowing dying from the most natural cause of all: old age. It has been a faithful companion. The children would linger under its branches, reaching up to pluck off its succulent fruits, or proudly pick a basket full to bring in for dinner, or rest under its by-then fruitless branches under the hot summer sun.

As we would begin to eat outside again in late spring, the tree was laden with its beautiful and delicious fruit. We shared with armies of early rising voracious birds and with the squirrels who always generously left more than plenty for us.

Even though it is ill...and is beyond benefit of some of the treatments we have tried, it hates to quit: it still produces a few branches of cherries in its slow farewell. We can't bring ourselves to cutting it down.

Soon, however, there will be a day when its scarred trunk and weakened branches will ask to be put to rest. We will need to then say a final goodbye, albeit with regret but also with thanks, to an old friend and very faithful companion.
