I just finished reading this for my book club and really enjoyed it. It is the story of a midwest couple, Patty and Walter, and their family relationships. There are all kinds of themes woven through the story, and much of it is told through Patty's third-person autobiography (her therapist's assignment). It takes place from the 80's through post-9/11 times. There is a little of everything: parenting relationships, intense personalities, political beliefs, a love triangle (or three), mental health issues, sibling issues, lots of sex, and intense love, fears and anxieties. It takes a look at personal freedom and important social and political issues through the author's vivid characters. The reader will have an look at our complex world through the eyes of the Berglund family members. The book is compelling and very well-written.
