It was a perfectly clear, blue sky day! After coffee at my corner bar, we set off for our lagoon adventure on a small boat, with our guide Andrea 2 and expert sailor, Signore Ungaro.

Andrea grew up on Murano, and lit up as we went by his home, his elementary school, aunt's house, etc. We saw a beautiful Romanesque church. Andrea told stories about where he came to swim and fish as a boy. We also motored by colorful Burano, and small uninhabited islands with ruins.

We docked at Torcello, and it was an unexpected surprise for me. Our first few steps on the island brought us a gorgeous church (Santa Maria Assunta di Torcello), grapes and poppies!

After our visit to Torcello, we went out to very shallow water (about 1 foot deep), and dropped anchor for a picnic. We enjoyed fresh bread, salami, cheese and wine. All was calm and quiet, except for the laughter coming from our little group.

It was a wonderful way to spend a few sunny hours in Venice!

What a brilliant day that must have been - getting out into the lagoon and exploring by boat is the way to go.

Didn't you adore Andrea? Touring Murano with a native Muranese--it just doesn't get any better!
