Palmabella's Italy Day 10: Santo Stefano

It was the last full day of our tour. June 2 is a holiday in Italy (Day of the Republic). The city was dressed up for the occasion!

My friends Ida and Debbie came to Bologna to spend our last evening with us. We had a leisurely morning at the hotel, then had pizza and a walk around Bologna's center, as it was Debbie's first visit.

Later that afternoon, some of us took a tour of the Santo Stefano complex, also called "the seven churches". the original church dates from the 11th century. Now there are 4 churches. When visiting, you will see mosaic floors, intricate brickwork, the tomb of San Petronio, patron saint of Bologna, and a replica of Christ's tomb. Besides the Benedictine cloister and Pilate's courtyard, the four remaining churches include the Basilica dei Santi Vitale e Agricola, the Church of Santo Sepolcro, the Church of the Holy Trinity, and the Church of the Holy Crucifix. There is a wonderful museum with many ancient artifacts.

The rest of our group met us at 6 for drinks in the piazza. It was our last evening, so there was much photography going on!

Ciao, bella! I've loved reading about your trip to Bologna, etc. this year. However, I can't find the recipe for vitello with the parmigiano cream sauce and fresh asparagus from either Biaggi or Al Sangiovese that you posted last year. It's one of my favorites. I would be so grateful if you could post a link for it on your blog.

Nancy

Nancy, It's not really a recipe...
I take 2 T. butter and heat it with about 1/4 c. chicken stock. Add parmigiano until it is the right consistency and pour over cooked veal cutlet just before serving. No cream!
(for 4 veal cutlets)

Grazie!

Nancy
