I saw this idea online around the 4th of July, and thought it would be fun to make to celebrate Federico's birthday. Here is how to do it:
You'll start with TWO vanilla cake mixes. Make the first box of batter, and prepare two 8" or 9" cake pans. Make that batter RED. You will have two layers. Cut them each in half horizontally to make 4 thin layers. You will need three, so remove one for another use.
Make the next batch of batter, and divide it EQUALLY into two bowls. Leave one bowl white, and make the other blue. Bake the white and blue layers. Cut the white layer in half horizontally.
You will need a 4" round cookie cutter or pattern. I used the metal base of a 4" tart pan as my guide. Cut a 4" red circle from one of the red layers, and one white 4" circle. Then cut a 4" circle out of the center of the thick blue layer, so it looks like a big blue donut!

Make a BIG batch of your favorite vanilla butter cream or cream cheese frosting.

Assembly:
Red layer, frosting
White layer, frosting
Red layer, frosting
Blue donut (frost around the center cut out hole)
Insert white 4" cake into the whole, frosting
Insert the 4" red cake into the whole
Frost sides and top of cake
