Bologna: Tuesday, July 8

Let the games begin! After breakfast, we walked the group members to the piazza and showed them some good choices for lunch, and where to find clean bathrooms at Eataly. Then, Shannon and I headed to the train station to meet Senorina and Jose, our last couple to arrive from their pre-group visit to Rome. We got them settled in at San Mamolo, introduced them to the others, and all met in the breakfast terrace at 4:00 for a glass of prosecco, official welcome with goody bags, and a booklet with info and photos of some of the places we would be visiting, and a daily itinerary.

We walked together to the piazza admiring some of Bologna's lovely portici.



We explained some brief Bologna history, pointed out the various building around Piazza Maggiore, and then visited the basilica of San Petronio.


At 6:00, we stopped for an apertivo and some antipasti at La Duca in Piazza Celestina.



Our Welcome Dinner was at 8:00 at Al Sangiovese, which never disappoints.


We began with platters of three typical types of pasta: Tagliatelle with Bolognese ragu, tortelloni di ricotta with butter and sage, and the favorite, gramigna con salsiccia.




Our second course were scallopini di vitello with asparagi (veal with asparagas) and filetto di manzo con balsamico (sliced beef fillet on a bed of arugula with balsamic and parmigiano, and some large salads.



Desserts included panna cotta with berries or chocolate, and Shannon's green apple sorbetto. YUM



Here we are with gracious Antonella, and then her husband, Chef Rocco, came out of the kitchen for our round of applause!



Off to bed around midnight for an early day tomorrow!
