I will respond to some questions then tell you about my plans for 8/8/08 which is the day of my dad's 100th birthday (he died a few years ago, he almost made 97).
Below Ford Rainey on the show "the Virginian"

Generally I do not run all out in races, I pick courses primarily for how scenic they are and how well they are organized. Usually I power hike all the hills and run the downhills and most of the flat. I average about 4mph when you include stopping at aid stations.(cookies, chips, gatorade,
coke, water etc.they are usually 3-6 miles apart) So typically in the area of 7 hours for a 50K
100th birthday plan- My brother unexpectedly asked if I wanted to hike Whitney, apparently he has wanted to do this for some time. I have done the hike oh at least 6 times. I came up with the idea of doing it on my dad's 100th birthday. My sister wants to go as well. They both are in Ok shape my brother is a masters swimmer and does 2 plus miles/day 3 times/week in the pool, My sister swims, runs a little etc. They both need to do some hiking though!
Whitney- 14495 is the highest mountain in the "contiguous" USA. We will do it as a dayhike
it is 22 miles round trip.

That is an amazing way to celebrate your father's birth! I look forward to hearing more about the adventure.
