car talk

What is up with this?!!!! Today a van turned left in an intersection in front of Gary, he couldn't stop, a wham, accident. He's okay, and so were all of them (a van full of kids, going to a baseball game... oh, oh, this is not good) but Gary's truck is totaled. It looked like the van was too. It could have been worse. Much worse.

The week after we got back from Europe, some moron hit my car while it was parked on the street. Messed it up pretty badly. It wound up in a body shop for 2 weeks. Then last week, it happened again--this time downtown BR while I was getting my hair cut. Not a huge dent this time, clearly it was high enough for it to have been a truck, and it left some white paint. And now today, this. ENOUGH! We're good drivers. We go for years and years without incident, and then wham, wham, wham. If the rule of 3s goes, that's it, this is over. Please.

I hate the way people drive around here. Nobody uses turn signals. Everyone follows too close. There are too many 20 year olds in pickup trucks, and they will cut you off and tailgate you and do all sorts of nasty things, but then they'll hop out and have perfect non-car manners--they'll hold doors and "ma'am" you and trip over themselves to carry a bag for you. And it does not seem that they feel any dissonance.

There is NO public transportation over the bridge. None whatsoever. Not even a passenger ferry. No bus, no train, no nothing.

If it were at all possible I'd get me a rowboat and go to work that way.

Kim:

I hear you. We have it coming and going, the younger ones speeding around with touches of immortality on their shoulders and the ones who are way too old (from all the retirement communities), who mortality is just too close. Either way, I think we could all use some defensive driving courses, but sometimes, no matter what you do, it's not safe. Glad neither you or Gary were hurt!
