It started with seeing one last spring. Gary went to the hardware and got me a Perky Pet (TM) feeder, and soon we had a pair. And just as soon, they vanished. But the day before we left for Europe, one showed up again, so I filled the Perky Pet before we left.
No hummingbirds were in evidence when we returned but I refilled the feeder anyway, and just like that, several started fighting over it. The Perky Pet had gotten a little damaged somehow, so I went to replace it. I couldn't decide on a model, so I brought home 3 more from Wally world.
At last count, we have at least 15-20 gathering. They are hard to count since they flit about so much. I keep going to the store for more sugar. Gary won't let them have beet sugar; they must have cane sugar, he says, "Because they are southern hummingbirds."
As I was typing this and rendering the video, a neighbor came by. She has dozens of feeders and had landscaped her yard with a carefully choreographed array of flowers especially for hummingbirds such that there is one thing or another in bloom year-round. She gets different varieties than the ruby-throated--which is all I thought came around here. And she told me all about Humnet. I guess we have a new obsession.

Thanks for giving us a view of the southern hummingbirds closeup. The western hummingbirds were upset that I trimmed the honeysuckle bush. Your video made me feel very close up to the birds.
