Gustav gets gusty

The rain and wind have picked up, splatter splatter whoosh. The tall tree tops are flailing about. But a trip around the websites etc. has been encouraging: it looks like BR won't get the hurricane force winds, or if we do, just a kiss. Stupid Gustav has his eye fixed on Terrebonne Parish and Houma. One of the students I'm fairly close to is down in Houma right now--it's his home but he should not be down there. I hate this.

In a fit of inspiration Gary and I went out and shook as many pears as we could out of one of the pear trees, reasoning Greedy Stupid Gustav would eat them if we didn't get there first. The kitties followed us out to the tree and the little one (Gary calls him/her "Woody" but to me the name is "EdieorShackleton") kept trying to make physical contact--rubbing legs, at one point nearly jumping into my arms. Hello? Tempting to take him/her up on it and bring him/her inside, but instead we played follow-the-leader back to the porch and whoosh, both kitties vanished under the house, using the larger opening that Hattie had for a hidey-hole when she first showed up. Good, they will be safe there.

Gary got the generator up on pallets and ran the electrical cable from it into the house through the window bird feeder in the kitchen. A little odd, but it works. We can't run as much of the house as we did back in BR. Refrigerator, a fan, a light, coffee every now and again, and it will be in cycles of 2 hours on, 4 off, or something like that. Both of us had the idea to purchase a window AC unit for this kind of occasion, since it will be really hot and steamy with no juice, but neither of us acted on this idea. Too late now, but next time. I'm glad my kidney infection is pretty much gone. The antibiotics aren't exactly agreeing with me but I'd hate to have a fever in the heat that will be.

Sonny is on his fancy perch in the kitchen eating and making a big mess. Beckett and Scout are policing under him, picking up the bits of things he drops. So in a way, the bird is feeding the dogs. Hattie is hiding from everything in her sanctuary on the top step.
