Beautiful vacation apartments in the serene Tuscan mountain countryside
Sleeps: 6 to10
We're thrilled to have been selected a Slow Travel favorite! Please see our review links below.
Stretch out poolside, enjoy our organically grown fruit and vegetables, refresh yourself with our pure mountain spring water, and otherwise relax and unwind in a serene countryside setting in between day trips to major Tuscan cities, historic hill towns, or the coast from Viareggio to Cinque Terre. We have also recently restored a beautiful and historic wayside Chapel on the property. It is ideal for intimate weddings, baptisms, and other celebrations. Join us for authentic Neapolitan pizza making classes! We've built a woodburning oven in our courtyard which we light at least once a week for pizza, baking, or roasting and you’re cordially invited to join in.
Set in the beautiful mountainous northwest corner of Tuscany, between the historic city of Barga and picturesque town of Coreglia Antelminelli, Grifoglia is situated on 20 acres of sunny hillside overlooking the mountains that surround the Ania River.
The area is ideal for those who would enjoy a fresh view of Tuscany and for walking and hiking. The setting through summer and late fall is of lush green terraced pastures and chestnut forest. Winter and Spring reveal vast mountain vistas, terraced hillsides, and clear hiking trails. In both spring and fall the forests are filled with the pungent porcini mushrooms for which the area is famous, and in the fall the chestnut trees yield numerous varieties of the chestnuts that are used in many delicious local specialties.
Grifoglia is centrally located, less than an hour north of the charming city of Lucca and about an hour and a half from Florence and Pisa, or the coast at Viareggio.
Beautiful and historically significant, the area is fascinating for its Florentine and agrarian past. The historic town of Coreglia Antelminelli is 2.5 miles away and Barga, renowned for its Florentine influences, cathedral and summer music festivals, is 5.5 miles. There is also important American history relative to W.W.II in the town of Sommocolonia just above Barga.
Walking and hiking is enjoyable on trails or quiet back roads. Locally, there is a lovely trail to Coreglia or up over the mountains to Lago Santo. Within an hours drive there are excellent trails in the Appenines and Apuane Alps with spectacular views of the mountain ranges.
Once an orchard farm, the property has three lovely old stone buildings, two recently renovated, that are typical of the area. The new pool on a sunny terrace provides the option of taking a day off and relaxing poolside or taking a refreshing dip before or after a long day of touring.
In all, there are two one-bedroom apartments and one studio (or combined a two-bedroom/two bath apartment.) On the front ground level of the main house there is a roomy one-bedroom apartment, accommodating up to 4 people with a double bed (or two single beds) and a very comfortable sofa-bed. There is also a lovely studio apartment with a communicating door to allow for the two bedroom apartment mentioned above. In a separate building (the renovated barn) there is a spacious one bedroom apartment, accommodating up to 4, with the bedroom and bath upstairs, kitchenette and sitting area on the ground level.
Each apartment has a kitchenette, a shower-bath and a sunny private terrace. The Terraces all have wrought iron and marble-top table and chairs. The furnishings and fixtures were selected and installed with great care to help you feel at home, we've tried to think of everything to make your stay as pleasant and comfortable as possible. The apartments are elegantly but simply furnished to leave you room to move your things in and move around.
To make your arrival easier we provide you with the basics in the kitchen: salt and pepper, sugar, coffee and a selection of teas, as well as all the equipment you'll need for comfortable cooking and eating in. It is best to stock up on a few things on your way in but there are two local supermarkets open on Sunday so shopping the day after arrival is possible.
We have an extensive vegetable and herb garden and a variety of fruit trees and berry bushes, and Pietro, the irrepressible gardener, has always planted enough in our garden to feed the proverbial army. For once in his life he can plant with abandon and have the great satisfaction that someone may actually eat it all. He'll put together a basket of fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables at your request.
There is a washing machine at your disposal and a drying rack for each apartment and, under the tuscan sun, as it were, clothes dry in no time.
We're here to help you with useful and, hopefully, interesting information; regale you with our European adventures; or just let you explore and enjoy!
We're thrilled to have been selected as a Slow Travel favorite! Although we don't show a lot of recent reviews, we still have many very happy guests, travelers have gotten out of the habit of writing reviews and we don't ask them to as others might.
