Villa Rosa: charming country accommodation in Umbria - slow trav favourite!

Location: Montemelino - Magione - Perugia

Sleeps: 6 or more

VILLA ROSA is a 300-year-old farmhouse which has been fully restored and looks out over farmland across to the villages of Solomeo and Corciano and Perugia in the distance. It is a short walk from the village of Montemelino which is tiny but boasts an excellent, reasonably-priced restaurant.

It is about 15 kilometres from Perugia and only 5 ks from the superstrada that connects Florence and Rome (we're about halfway between those cities). This road can neither be seen nor heard from the house, but its vicinity makes VILLA ROSA a great base for seeing Umbria and Tuscany. Montemelino is not serviced by public transport, however, so a stay here only really works if you have wheels.

Cooking classes with a chef from "L'Osteria Il Gufo" in Perugia can be arranged on Sundays and/or Mondays. These mini-courses should be requested well in advance.

A 6X12 metre salt water pool is available for the enjoyment of our guests.

There are wonderful walks in the area as our property backs onto a forest. Walk to the top of the hill and you will be rewarded with a breaktaking 360° view of the area - from Lake Trasimeno around to Perugia and Assisi in the distance.

"LA CASETTA" COTTAGE

"La Casetta" cottage at the end of the garden consists of two bedrooms (one with double bed, one with two singles that can also be made up as a double), two bathrooms, a kitchen/dining/sitting room with fireplace and a mezzanine area with twin beds (which can also become a double bed). So it accommodates up to 6 people.

Outside, there is a large terrazza which looks out over the view of the valley (as do all the rooms in the cottage except the bathrooms, which look out over olive groves). The cottage has been restored to a very high standard, combining the old-style charm of wooden beams, old brick floors and an open fire with high-tech comforts such as a jacuzzi spa bath, airconditioning, heating, a dishwasher, satellite television, VCR, DVD and stereo system. It is well-stocked with books, magazines and movies in English.

The cottage is offered on a weekly basis running Saturday to Saturday. Tarriffs run from 600 euros per week.

"Il GELSOMINO" APARTMENT

"Il Gelsomino" is an apartment situated on the ground floor of our farmhouse and provides very spacious accommodation for four people. There is a huge kitchen area with an island bench, six-flame gas cook top, wall oven, dishwasher and plenty of granite worktops. At the other end of the room is a sitting room area with television, VCR and DVD player and a library of books, magazines, guide books and films in English. Meals can be eaten on stools at the kitchen bench, at a table in this large room or outside on the terazza which opens directly off the kitchen, has beautiful views of the valley across to Perugia and is very private. There is a bedroom with ensuite bathroom (with tub and shower overhead). It also has wonderful views of the valley and garden.

Tarriffs run from 475 euros per week. Shorter stays are possible (3-nights min)

"LE ROSE" APARTMENT

"Le Rose", for 3 people, is situated on the first floor of the farmhouse. It has a large bedroom (with double bed and single bed) and spacious ensuite bathroom with bath and shower and a fully-equipped modern kitchen with plenty of granite bench space. It has a private outdoor eating area under a pergola with lovely views across the garden and pool to the hills beyond. Tarriffs start at 425 euros per week. Shorter stays are possible (min. three nights)

HOW TO FIND US

Directions to get to VILLA ROSA

1) From Rome:

Take the AI autostrada. Exit at Orte. Follow the signs for Perugia. Stay on this superstrada until the turn off for Perugia at Terni. You are now about 90 kilometres from Montemelino! Go past Todi, Marsciano, Deruta, etc.

When you reach Ponte San Giovanni, however, follow the signs for Perugia-Firenze.

Go past all the Perugia exits, the last of which is Ferro di Cavallo. Exit at the next exit - Corciano.

2) From Florence:

Take the A1 autostrada. Exit for Bettolle and follow the signs for Perugia. Take the "raccordo autostradale" Perugia - Bettolle. Continue for about 60 kilometres, passing the exits for Castiglione del Lago, Tuoro sul Trasimeno, Passignano sul Trasimeno etc. Pass the exit for Magione and get ready to exit at Corciano.

3) At the Corciano exit, you will see a whole lot of signs - turn left there. Go straight ahead, past Il Battibecco restaurant, under the underpass, past a car dealer and take the first turn left at the Penchini caterpiller dealership - you'll see a sign for Montemelino. Go straight ahead, through the village of Castelvieto, under an underpass, over a narrow little bridge till you come to a roadside shrine. Turn left there and keep going straight ahead. Don't turn up the dirt road to Montemelino, but keep going straight ahead till you reach another shrine. Turn right and come up the hill on the asphalt road.

Where the road forks, take the old narrow winding road on the left and after a couple of curves, you'll see a big pink house - that's us. Go straight to the electronic gates, and you'll find our doorbell under the ceramic "Villa Rosa" sign.
