The Paris Garret – Low-Cost Lodging for Two

Location: 55 bis rue Jean Pierre Timbaud, Paris

Sleeps: 2

“There is only one way to live cheaply abroad -- live as the people of the country live.”
-- Blanche McManus, “The American Woman Abroad," 1911

This little spot under the eaves was one of our first loves in France,  nearly two decades ago. We offer it with the thought that Paris is for everyone, full of wonders smaller than the Eiffel Tower and far off the guidebook path. That it’s much more fun to meander - frequent the baker, barter at the street antique show, share a map with a stranger or smile at the park-bench lovers -- than it is to consult with the hotel concierge or file onto the bus for the 90-second-per-site city tour. That the greatest pleasures come by surprise and do not have much to do with the size of your purse.

“Life in a garret / Is great if you dare it / Cherie."
--The Clamtones, “Midnight in Paris,” 1976

THE SPACE

The garret is a recently renovated, pleasantly decorated lodging for one or two. It is south-facing, with good natural light and a view of Paris rooftops. You can cook if you like, or have breakfast with croissants from the neighborhood bakery, wonderful fruit preserves from the nearby Monoprix and coffee any way you like it.

Basics: 17 square meters; open-plan kitchen with two electric burners, microwave and refrigerator; bathroom with toilet, sink and shower; standard double bed; electric heat and air conditioning; wifi.

No-Cost Extras: Linens, dishes, cookware, coffee maker, clock radio, wifi, air conditioning, iron and ironing board, hair dryer, small library of Paris guidebooks and fiction set in France, neighborhood guide with restaurants and shopping for the essentials and more.

Please Note: The garret is a non-smoking space. It is on the French 6th floor, and you must walk up to it. There is no elevator. Great for your thighs; an early guest aptly dubbed it “Chez Stairmaster.”

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

The garret is on rue Jean Pierre Timbaud in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, in a working class - middle class neighborhood, near Place de la Republic and within walking distance of four Metro stations: Parmentier, Republic, Oberkampf and Goncourt. The Seine is six minutes away by Metro. The Folie-Mericourt neighborhood has traditionally welcomed immigrants to France, and its population still is a mix of native French and people of other origins. The garret also is on the fringe of the Oberkampf area, a popular night venue for young people. There is little tourism, so a visitor is more of a curiosity than a nuisance - for example, to the waiter and the shopkeeper. We believe this makes for a more friendly reception and many of our guests agree.

THE BOTTOM LINE

300 Euros per week with deposit of 30 percent upon reservation via personal check in dollars or British pounds per exchange rate at time of booking. Balance in Euros upon arrival.

FROM THE GARRET GUESTBOOK

“Thanks for an extremely enjoyable week in your delightful, well-organized garret. The whole neighborhood is agreeable and interesting.”
-- Mr. and Mrs. M., Nottingham, England

“Your inimitable attention to detail made life easier for us as weary travelers, especially your description of the garret, directions to it, and the neighborhood guide. It is great to stay in an area of Paris where non-Parisians are regarded as a welcome novelty rather than a wearisome necessity.”
--P.B. and B.P, Melbourne, Australia

“We very much enjoyed Chez Stairmaster. Clearly someone has been living here who took the time to get the details right. Rue Jean Pierre Timbaud is a cheap thrill in itself.”
--Mr. and Mrs. C. California, U.S.A.

“A very warm stay in a lovely part of Paris.”
--Mr. B.S., London

“You cozy garret was just the answer to my Paris housing needs. I truly appreciate and thank you again for your thoughtful and helpful suggestions. I also made good use of your Paris guidebooks. I had a highly wonderful time and would recommend your rental should anyone ask for a reference.”
-- Ms. P.A. Mountain View, California
