Trip Planning, Italy, Group Tours

Private and small group tours of Venice and its Lagoon conducted by professional guides.

Location: Venice, Italy

VENICE FOR BEGINNERS - YOUR FIRST WALK IN TOWN

The best approach to Venice, if you are here for
the first time is an introductory tour that begins with some of the 'must sees',
such as St Mark's Square, the former political centre of the Venetian Republic,
and St.Mark's Basilica, a 900 year old marvel of architecture, unique in Italy
for its golden Byzantine and Medieval mosaics, its intricate stone and marble
traceries and exuberant orientalizing domes. (Our guide will be armed with a
special pass, so you will skip the line to get in !)

This part of the tour, besides illustrating all
the famous architectures (the Doges' Palace, Sansovino Library,
the Bridge of Sighs, the Bell
Tower
...) will also provide our guides the occasion for a
well-articulated historical introduction to the city: its genesis, apogee and
decline, through the course of time, spanning from the 9th to the 19th
century!

After that, away from the crowds, we take a walk
"backstage" to discover the unique layout of the city: bridges, fancy private
palaces, narrow alleyways, large and small squares, elaborate stone well
heads

You'll learn how to get oriented in this maze
like city, how it feels living in a place like this, and how today's
administrators deal with the maintenance of this fragile heritage, facing year
after year the risks of massive and unsustainable tourism!

We'll end our visit in the busy central area of
Rialto, defined by historians "the Wall Street of Europe in the Middle Ages" to
see the bridge - with a spectacular view on the Grand Canal and its famous
surroundings.

This itinerary is designed to be a
complete introduction to Venice in just three hours, requires a comfortable pair
of shoes or sandals

THE INSIDERS' HEART OF VENICE

A walk into the central core of Venice on the
footsteps of past and present Venetians

From St Mark's Square we walk in the old theater
district, passing by the famous Gran Teatro la Fenice, the celebrated Opera
House, newly rebuilt after the 1996 fire which greatly damaged it.

Then, in the steps of Antonio Vivaldi and
Casanova into the Sant'Angelo and San Samuele districts, once renowned for
theaters, music, and world famous artists such as the inventor and textiles'
designer Mariano Fortuny, Spanish by origin and, like many others, Venetian by
adoption.

In our day, there is Alberto Valese's art shop
'Ebru', with its magic paper-mache' creations, based on an ancient Turkish
technique, carries on the local tradition of highly skilled craftmanship.

We'll use the popular "gondola shuttle" to cross
the Grand Canal at San Toma', and explore the Sestier di San Polo (one of the
six neighborhoods of Venice), passing by the house of Carlo Goldoni, the
greatest Venetian playwright, who based his witty comedies on everyday life in
18th century Venice, still successufully staged today.

By the Rialto market area, we walk into the
former red light district (prostitution was legalized here in 1358 ,but is
illegal in the Italy of today ! and go by the majestic palaces of Isabella
Teotochi Albrizzi and Caterina Cornaro, two of the few female protagonists of
the local Venetian history scene through the centuries.

The colorful food market area we pass through is
enlivened by stylish wine bars and cafés lined along the Grand Canal where
locals and foreigners linger over their prosecco.

Now we cross the world famous Rialto bridge into
the San Giovanni Grisostomo district, home of many silk merchants in the MIddle
Ages, where Marco Polo and his family lived. We end our tour with a taste of the
best gelato in town...your guide will make sure you get back easily to St Mark's
square, only five minutes away.

VENICE, THE POWER OF THE PAST, THE EVERLASTING MYTH

St Mark's Basilica, the Doges'
Palace, the Bridge of Sighs, the Prisons

St Mark’s Basilica with the spiritual,
all-pervading light of its golden mosaics, with its sumptuously colored marble
floor, will introduce the theme of Venice’s intense relations with
Constantinople and the Eastern world.

After that your guide will spend some time at
illustrating all the different buildings surrounding the two world famous
Squares, the Piazza and the Piazzetta San Marco: the Library, the Bell Tower,
the Clock Tower...there's a lot to say and see...!

We'll then continue with a tour of the Doges'
Palace, seat of Venetian power for over nine centuries, a majestic, Moorish
looking architecture built between the 14th and the 15th centuries.

Here you will learn about the rise, long life,
and fall of „La Serenissima“, the Most Serene Venetian Republic, a powerful
maritime state that based its legendary wealth on international commerce, ship
building and diplomacy.

Amongst the 'must sees': the Golden Stair (la
Scala d'Oro) by Jacopo Sansovino, the powerful paintings by Jacopo Tintoretto
and Paolo Veronese, the enormous Council Hall (Sala del Maggior Consiglio) and
the Armoury.

Cross the Bridge of Sighs we'll visit the so
called "New" Prisons, located on a separate building designed at the end of the
16th century to be a more humane and funtional jail, still in use until
1922!
