La Forteresse at the top of Menerbeswww.theluberon.com/forteresse.htmVacation Rentals, France, Provence Storybook house for 2 at top of Menerbes - La ForteresseLocation: Menerbes, Luberon, Provence Sleeps: 2 (plus small children)
A house straight out of a storybook at the top of one of the most beautiful villages in France.
La Forteresse is part of the medieval ramparts of Menerbes dating back to the wars of religion. It has soaring views over the Luberon mountain and valley (as it used to be a lookout for approaching invaders).
Great care has been taken to preserve the period feel of the house which you will notice in the detailing like the time-worn stone sinks and the ancient floor tiles that keep the house cool even on the hottest days.
For a 1-bedroom property this is a large house, with living room, kitchen/dining room, outside patio, bathroom and a big bedroom in a delightful vaulted room. The bedroom in fact has two parts, separated by a curtain. One is the double bedroom, the other has three single beds, so is appropriate for small children if you don't mind sleeping in the same space.
From every room you see the splendid view of the mountain opposite and the vineyards below.
Menerbes is one of the perched, hill-top villages of the Luberon and is perfect as a base for exploring Provence. The house is three minutes walk down to the bakeries, shops, restaurants and bar of Menerbes. This is the village that inspired Peter Mayle to write 'A Year in Provence'.
