The Village of Fonte Vetriana
Fonte Vetriana, a village in the municipality of Sarteano, is located in the unspoiled hills of
Val d'Orcia in the province of Siena. Perched at 750 meters altitude on the side of Monte Cetona, Fonte Vetriana enjoys a splendid panorama of rolling green hills and medieval cities. This sunny hill-side position ensures a pleasant temperature year-round.
A living village barely touched by tourism, Fonte Vetriana provides visitors the opportunity to savour the real Tuscany. The village has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, and the remains of these prehistoric settlements can be visited in the village today. Since the 17th century, three families have inhabited Fonte Vetriana; their descendants reside in the village to this day. Presently the lands surrounding the village are farmed.
Location of Fonte Vetriana
Fonte Vetriana provides an ideally located base for exploring the villages, art and cuisine of Tuscany and central Italy. The village is:
- located in southern Tuscany, 2 hours north of Rome and 1.5 hours south of Florence;
- situated in the heart of Val d'Orcia, an area designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage
Site;
- surrounded by renowned Medieval and Renaissance landmark cities such such as
Montepulciano (28 km); Pienza (38 km); Siena (85 km); San Casciano dei Bagni
(12 km); Cetona (12 km); Chianciano (20 km); and Montalcino (54 km); and
- conveniently located only 14 km from the Chiusi-Chianciano exit of the A1 Rome-
Florence motorway and 12 km from the Chiusi-Chianciano rail station.
Activities in Fonte Vetriana
Fonte Vetriana is also perfect for nature lovers:
beautiful hikes and bicycle rides lie just outside the door of
Casa Colle Cetona. Monte Cetona is laced with unpaved roads that wend their way up the mountain to the 1148 meter peak. The commanding view from the top of Monte Cetona extends from the hills of northern Lazio to Umbria to the Maremma area in Tuscany.
A masterpiece of medieval architecture also lies close to the village: the famous Spineto Abbey, constructed in 1085 by Benedictine monks of the Vallombrosian order, is located just 2 km from Fonte Vetriana.
