History, beauty, comfort, convenience, at budget prices!

2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms.

In 2008 I bought this lovely little house, classified as an historic monument, as a vacation home to escape to occasionally, and I've been renovating it inside for my own pleasure.  I would like to share it with others who like travelling the way I do - slowly!  I wanted a house in a town in a beautiful countryside and near other towns.  I chose Umbria not only because of the physical beauty of the region, but also because of the predominance of art, culture, and history in the area.  Porta San Donato, built in 1242, right in the old town and with a gorgeous view of the mountains, was exactly what I was looking for.

The house is warm and cozy, with 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, an eat-in kitchen, living room with fireplace, and a view from the windows of the mountains from the living room and bedrooms, and view of the old town from the kitchen. (The picture of the mountains on the right is taken from the living room window.) In my experience, many houses in Italy are rather dark, with little daylight coming in the windows and inadequate artificial lighting. Porta San Donato has all new lights, but during the day the daylight coming through the windows is more than sufficient, and the house is always bright and cheerful.

There are so many places to discover on nearby day trips, not to mention the old town of Gualdo Tadino itself.  To the south there's Assisi, Spello, Trevi, Spoleto, Bevagna, and many other beautiful hill towns.  To the north there's Gubbio, to the east the Appenine mountains, gorgeous gorges, and the scenic towns of Le Marche.  And to the west is Perugia and its many surrounding towns.  I think I will still be discovering new places to visit for the next several years!

Built into the city wall in 1242, Porta San Donato was one of the four original gatehouses of Gualdo Tadino and is honored every year in the town's most important celebration, "The Games of the Gates".  Four teams representing the original four gates battle it out with slingshots, crossbows, riding donkeys, and much more, in a three day medieval pageant at the end of September.

Gualdo Tadino is known for its beautiful ceramics.  There are many ceramics artisans and stores in the area.
