I am having trouble using PayPal from Italy

PayPal works differently for Italian residents. To set up a PayPal account from Italy

  • Go to www.paypal.com and click Sign Up in the upper right corner.
  • Sign up for a Personal Account (this allows you to send funds).
  • You must set up your PayPal account to use your credit card not your bank.
  • You may have to complete the Expanded Use Enrollment Process before you can transfer money. This may take several days to be set up.

How do I post a Listing?

Click "Place a Listing" in the upper right of the heading. The steps for posting a listing are on that page.

How do I pay for my listing?

Once you have placed a listing, an invoice is emailed to you. That email will contain a link to Paypal containing all the necessary information about your listing, where you can either use your Paypal account, or just use your credit card if you do not have a Paypal account. You can also pay by check or bank wire.

Payments by credit card or Paypal are accepted only from the following countries: Anguilla, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Latvia, Luxembourg, Lithuania, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Poland, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, Uruguay, Venezuela.

If you wish to place an ad from a country not on the list, you'll have to use one of the other payment options.

How do I renew my listing?

Click Manage Listings (there is a link in the header). Login using the email address and password that you defined when you registered. If you cannot remember your password, on the login page there is a link to "Request a Password Reminder". There is also a link to contact us if you cannot remember which email you used.

Once you are in the Manage Listings system, you will see all your classifieds. Click the "Renew Listing" button to renew the listing and make payment.

We email you a month before your listing expires with information on how to renew.

How many people are looking at my listing?

Your web designer or web host will be able to tell you how many people click from the Slow Travel website through to your website (referring URLs statistics). People can get to your site from your listing, from the relevant content pages where a short form of your listing is displayed and from any reviews for your company.

How can I become more visible on the Slow Travel website?

Ways to become more visible on Slow Travel:

  • Take out a GOLD listing. GOLD listing appear higher on the list on the subcategory page and people will see your listing first. GOLD listings also allow you to create Special Offers, described below.
  • Be sure to renew your listing each year to keep your place in the list. Listings are displayed with older listings first.
  • If you have a gold listing, you can use our Special Offers feature to post any sales or announcements. These are displayed (in rotation) on the main classifieds page and on the appropriate subcategory page.
  • The main focus of the Slow Travel website is reviews for vacation rentals, hotels and restaurants. Ask some of your recent visitors to send us reviews. When people tell you they found you through Slow Travel, ask them to send in a review. This is the page your visitor goes to for sending a review: www.slowtrav.com/reviews/. They must register with our system and fill out a detailed form to send us a review.

How to Create a Good Classified Listing

Update Your Classifieds for the current year

Check your classified(s) and be sure they have the correct information for the current year. Have your prices changed? Are you offering new services?

You can easily modify your classified listing as follows:

  • Click the "Manage Listings" link in the upper right of the header in the classifieds.
  • Login with your email address and the password you created when you registered on the system (there is a link for a password reminder if you forgot your password).
  • You will see the list of your classifieds. Click "Modify Listing" and you can change any of your listing information; company name and information, caption, description, photos. You can even change the category for your listing.

Put Lots of Information in your Classified

Once you have created and published your classified listing, you can go back and make changes whenever you like! Go to "Manage Listings", login, and then change text, change company information, delete and add photos.

  • Have a good caption! Your company name and caption appear on the category list of classifieds. Make sure your caption contains enough information about your listing to make people click to see the full listing. For example, instead of "Vacation rentals in Campania", write "Villas and apartments on the Amalfi Coast, from moderate to luxury, sea views, town locations". The longer caption tells someone more about your listing. You have up to 100 characters for your caption.
  • Make your text pretty and informative! Write clear and detailed text. You can have up to 5000 words, so there is plenty of room to tell people all about your business and what you offer. Write a good introduction, then tell them more details about your services. Use headings to separate sections of the text. In the "Description" box, there is a pulldown to apply a style to a paragraph. Position your cursor in the line you want to format and then pulldown and select a heading level. Heading 2 gives you a nice heading with an underline.
  • A picture is worth a 1000 words! Upload the maximum photos you can have with your listing (3 photos or 6 photos for Gold listings). Make sure your photos are full size (see below) and good quality. Entice people with photos of your property and area! If you have photos on your listing now, but want different ones, delete the current photos and add new ones. See below for some photo hints.
  • Have more than one classified listing! If your company offers a variety of services, consider having listings in each category that describes your business. For example, maybe you have vacation rentals in Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio. Consider having one listing for each of these categories. You can easily copy your listing to create a new one.
  • Use special formatting! Use headings in your listing to separate the different areas of text. Use a horizontal line. These are all available in the Description input box. Read more about formatting your listing.

Uploading Photos for Your Classified

Format your images to be at 72ppi resolution and 300 pixels wide. This format looks best.

How can do people get more than the allowed photos on their listing (3 for regular listings, 6 for Gold listings)? They do this in two ways.

  • Since an image can be 300 pixels wide and 600 pixels high, take two photos and make one image (for a space between the images use the background color FFF8DC) as long as it is not higher than 600 pixels.
  • Include HTML in your text to display an image that resides on your website. Some people do this to display their logo in the text.

How People Contact You Through Your Classified

We use an email form, instead of an email link, for inquiries to cut down on spam to you. Instead of clicking a link that opens up an email in their email program, people click a link and fill out a form. This form is then emailed to you with the subject: Inquiry from Slow Travel about your classified listing 9999. When you reply to this email, the reply goes to the person who filled out the form.

I recommend that you go to your classified and test this to be sure you receive the email (to make sure you have the correct email address in your listing).

If you do not want to use this form for emails, you have two options:

  • Remove your email address from your listing, in the email field, but put it into the text of your listing. You can use HTML to make this a live email link.
  • Do not list any email address in your classified. List only your website so that people have to go to your website to contact you.

Possible Scams (Fraud)

We have been alerted to some scams that people are trying to do on many websites, including Slow Travel. This is how this scam works.

  • Someone emails you wanting to make a booking.
  • They send you a check or bank wire for an amount higher than your price.
  • They request that you send them a check for the difference.

The scam is that the check they send you bounces - so you end up sending them money, but you never receive any payment from them. Please watch out for these scams. We have determined some of the email addresses used by these scammers and have banned them, but we cannot catch all of them. These scams are going on all over the internet, not just from the Slow Travel Classifieds.

From Slow Travel - automatic warning of Spam/Scam inquires

We try to catch these spammers/scammers when they start working their way through the listings, but do not always catch them in time. We have an automatic feature that emails you when we have been hit by a spammer. The email tells you what the spam email was, so you can be sure to not respond to it.
