> SlowTrav > Rest of the World > Travel Notes Postcard - A Day Sailing on the AdriaticMaeby My husband and I wanted a day away from the crowds in Split on a recent trip to Croatia. It was the halfway point in our two week holiday, and we wanted to relax and enjoy the sea. We booked a day sailing trip on a 50 foot sailing yacht. We weren’t sure what to expect, but we ended up having a great day of sailing, sunbathing, swimming, and a delicious lunch.
Tim and Freddie We booked the trip through Sail Croatia Holidays. I expected it to be a largish company, based on their brochure. What we got instead was a very friendly Australian couple, Tim and Katie, who lived on the boat along with their dog, Freddie. Tim and Katie sail around the Mediterranean during the winter, and during the summer months they base themselves in Split and do day sails. One of the great things is that they will take as few as two people out on their boat. My husband and I usually travel alone, and we have missed out on experiences before because of our small group size. On this cruise, two others were on board-crew from a luxury yacht who also wanted a break before they sailed again.
Lunch was a selection of the best from Split’s local green market, bought that morning with fresh bread from the bakery. We made sandwiches of local meats and cheeses, and enjoyed fresh fruits and vegetables. Croatian wine was poured freely, and we enjoyed relaxing on the boat and eating a delicious lunch with our hosts-and Freddie.
It was a wonderful day with wonderful views, food, and people. Tim and Katie were so welcoming, and it felt more like being on a friend’s personal boat than something we paid for. It was a highlight of our trip, and a day we will never forget. The cost per person for an 8 hour sail and lunch was €90 per person.
