When: August 2002

Small hotel in the country near the Midi-Pyrenees.

We stayed in this small hotel, Chateau Lassalle (3-star), in August 2002. I believe the rate was around $120 per night (breakfast included--typical European-style). It is technically in the Lot-et-Garonne (Departement 47) in Aquitaine, but it borders the Gers (Departement 32) in the Midi-Pyrénées. It is located about 15 km south of Agen. It is considered to be in the town of Moirax, but it is really 5km out of town in the country. It was quite a remote location, which has its pros and cons.

We booked online and the booking went very smoothly. All the email responses were timely and informative. The hotel requires payment in advance. We received hotel vouchers in the mail along with a detailed map (thank goodness!).

When you arrive at the hotel, you drive up a long driveway to the hotel -- very pretty. The hotel is a converted 18th century Bastide, which is full of character. The people at the front desk were very nice, and couple of hotel cats were lazily resting on chairs. The people at the front desk said we were the first Americans they had seen in weeks -- a good thing for a European experience!

We stayed on the second floor (stairs only, I think). The room was a little worn, especially the bathroom, but it was a nice size. This is the only place we stayed where hair dryers were not in the room, but they let me borrow one from the front desk. Since the location was so remote, the hotel is very quiet. The only sound I heard all night was an unknown animal scratching around on the roof!

There is a restaurant at the hotel called La Cour Carrée. We dined there the night we arrived (made reservations while emailing with the hotel booking). It was nice that there is a restaurant on the grounds, because it would have been a little inconvenient to drive elsewhere. The food was mediocre, yet it was one of the most expensive meals we had in France; the service was well below average. To order wine, a waiter takes you to see the bottles. We chose a bottle before we ordered anything, but we did not receive it until after we had received our entrees (we had appetizers as well). I liked the old character of the hotel and would stay there again, but I would not recommend the restaurant (although I know that was just one experience).

We stayed at this location to tour Gers. We visited the villages, Auch, Condom, Eauze, Larresingle, and Fourcés. If I were to stay in this area again (and I do hope to visit again), I would definitely stay in Fourcés. It was my favorite village in the area--small and picturesque. While we walked around Fourcés, we saw two places that looked nice from the outside: Chateau de Fourcés www.chateau-fources.com tel:05 62 29 49 53

Chateau du Garros www.chateaudugarros.com tel:05 62 29 47 89

The room rates at Chateau de Fourcés (a small hotel) are approximately 100 - 250 Euros per night with demi-pension options available. I remember reading their restaurant menu when we walked by, and it looked very good. Chateau du Garros is only a few-minute walk from the center of town, and it is a bed & breakfast with three rooms.

I would highly recommend visiting this beautiful area of France!
