Great value, central location in the city of Bordeaux, and very nice staff.

The Hotel de Normandie is a 3-star hotel. It was a great value in the city of Bordeaux (room rates at the time, in Euors, were 69-122 for a double room). The rates vary according to the number of beds and whether you want a bathtub or shower. We stayed in a room with 2 beds and a bathtub, and it was 103 Euros. The rooms were just slightly dated and average-size, but they were very well-kept and clean. There are also some upgraded rooms with balconies that are more expensive than the regular doubles. I am a nonsmoker, and I didn't notice any smoke smell in the room. I can't remember if it was technically a nonsmoking room or not, however. Also, I was suprised how quiet the room was even though we were only on the second floor (known as the first floor in France!). Breakfast is offered as well, but I did not try it.

The location and staff are excellent. It is near the public gardens (gorgeous), the Esplanade des Quinconces (must see), the Grand Theatre, Place Gambetta, the Maison des Vins (place to book wine tours), the quais, and many places to eat and shop.

The staff there was so nice, although English is not fluently spoken (not a big deal to me). The staff does speak some English, and we got through everything with a few French words, some English, and some charades. After I stumbled through a phone call to book, I confirmed by fax. So if you know anyone who speaks French, ask them to call for you! At the front desk, they were happy to exchange money and were very helpful to point and draw on the maps they provided.

The hotel's website has some informative pictures. Overall, it was a pleasant experience staying here and I would definitely stay here again.
