Charming hotel in a busy area.

Although I wouldn’t stay in this hotel again, I had a good time while I was there. For this Paris visit, I wanted to be in the Latin Quarter, Notre Dame, Seine nexus, just to see what it’s like. The area is incredibly touristy, crowded, and stuffed with multi-ethnic Express Menu restaurants. It’s an old “neighborhood,” too, and has a certain share of charm, away from the ultra-busy Blvd. San Michelle and San Germaine.

My double room (€98/night) was predictably tiny, but worked for one person. I slept near the airy window, which overlooked a courtyard, away from the busy street. The room décor was kind of sweet, reds and ochres, fairly well thought out, and the bathroom (sans bidet) even had a couple of washcloths, nice towels, along with a fine shower and a basket of amenities.

The mini-fridge held wine, liquor, juice, water and snacks at prices cheaper than outside at the cafes. Cable TV did not include BBC or CNN. The bed was great, and the sheets crisp and smooth. Petit dejeuner was included, and you could phone the desk to have it brought up to your room; it’s an OK offering, with a pretty tray and china. I also was able to achieve a single glass of ice to take up to my room when I returned in the evening; it felt like winning a gold Olympic medal each time.

The staff was generally nice, if not overly solicitous, except for one young woman who barely spoke to me after, mid-way in my stay, I made a gentle complaint about that day’s cleaning effort, which happened in two awkward parts, morning AND afternoon. She may be the same person referred to in another review of the Hotel du Levant on Slow Travel. Upon leaving, I signed the guest book and referred to Slow Travel and the forth-coming availability of this review.
